From the papers of Faed's nephew John Francis Faed, son of the Royal Academician Thomas Faed (1826-1900), and so probably addressed to a family member.

He contin…ues, regarding a portrait of Hallam by Thomas Phillips: 'I have this day seen Phillips Copy of your Portrait - very nearly finished - &, as it seems to me, executed with care & accuracy'. Murray considers that the copy 'has rather more colour than the original - but time will bring down the tone - Phillips will write to you for instructions how to dispose of his copy'. He concludes with regard to Lady Bell, who had just seen Hallam.

Thomas Hudson, a fashionable portrait painter, friend of William Hogarth and teacher of Joshua Reynolds, employed drapery painters (painters of costume for other artists) to assist him; one of the most talented was his sitter, Josef van Haeken (1699 -1749), a Flemish genre and portrait painter, recognized as one of the greatest drapery painters of early Georgian England, where he was known as Joseph Van Aken . Many English portrait painters used his skill for painting the lavish dresses worn by sitters of other artists in the manner of Van Dyck s portraits. John Faber (the Younger), prolific Dutch engraver, became the foremost London mezzotint portraitist; his publisher, George Pulley, was a London map and print-seller.
