In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Good. A collection of six different titles from the Observer's Pocket Book series. All uniformly bound in cloth of varying colour, with titles front and spine. All illustrated. 16mos. All volumes in generally close to or meeting very good condition, some are slightly pushed at spine ends, most have a little dust marking to the upper text block edge, and some have a previous owner's name or inscription internally, else are neat, clean and tight. The previous owner's inscription inside Garden Flowers is ugly and disfiguring to the front free endpaper. All in illustrated dust wrappers, shelf worn, rubbed and bumped, a little scuffed at ends of lightly sunned spines sometimes obscuring titles on spine. Dust wrappers on Garden Flowers and British Butterflies are price clipped. All reprints or revised editions issued between mid 1950s and early 1970s. Observer's Pocket books is a series of pocket-sized books published by Frederick Warne and covering topics such as hobbies, art, nature and history. The first in the series - British Birds - was published in 1937. The 99th title, the Observer's Book of Observer's Books was released in 1999 (by Peregrine Books) in a matching format. The series was rounded to 100 with the publication of Wayside and Woodland in 2003. Many of the titles have been revised, reprinted, updated and released in different dust wrappers over the years - it is estimated that there are some 800 variations - and have become collectible: the earlier numbers and rarer issues can be hard to find We have many books from the Observer Pocket Book series in stock and can offer generous discounts to those ordering more than one at a time. Please inquire.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. John Clegg (Jacket photo) (illustrator). New and Revised Edition. The Observer's Book of Ferns - Observer's Book No. 12. With printer's code 1881.366 which I believe indicates that the book was printed in Mar 1966. The book was the twelfth in the series, being revised in 1951 and again in 1965. There were six different jacket designs. Describing 54 species - (N.B. the dustwrapper states 45 species!) - with colour and photographic illustrations and introductory text figures. With a Preface to the first edition, and another for the revised edition (dated April 1965), plus an eighteen-page Introduction by the author. ***This copy has the very scarce black & white (monochrome) illustrated dustwrapper - one of three titles with "Common Fungi" and "Lichens" which carried these monochrome dustwrappers - apparently only used for the last few copies in stock, issued with these dustwrappers shortly before the three titles were allowed to go out of print, around 1972. ***Near fine in pale-green textured boards with dark-blue titles to the spine and front board. The covers are nice and clean - just slightly creased at the top and tail of the spine. Corners sharp. No bumps. Page block edges nice and clean - just lightly foxed at the top edge. No reading lean to the binding. Internally the book is also near fine - extremely clean with neat ownership details on the back of the front free endpaper (see scans) but no other annotations. Printed on nice quality paper. No creases or tears. No marks. No cracking to the binding. Spine tight. ***In a near fine monochrome illustrated dustwrapper, which has been price-clipped by the publisher, with a new 75p net Warne price-sticker to the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete without any loss, with just very slight rubbing and creasing at the extremities, commensurate with age and handling - mainly at the top edges which are also slightly browned. No serious creases or tears. No chips or loss. No fading to the red titles on the spine. ***147mm x 95mm. 128 pages including a six-page index at the back of the book. ***'This book for the pocket provides a comprehensive guide to 45 British species of Ferns, with 36 colour and 36 half-tone plates, and an Introduction illustrated with 19 black and white text figures. The description of each species, together with the given facts of distribution throughout the British Isles, will prove sufficient guide for the Observer to identify the majority of species to be found in this country.' (Quote taken from the front flap of the dustwrapper) Jacket illustration: Maidenhair (or Common Wall) Spleenwort, Asplenium trichomanes (Photo: John Clegg). ***A beautiful example of the "Observer's Book of Ferns" with the exceptionally scarce black & white illustrated dustwrapper. A lovely clean copy of a desirable title, with beautiful colour illustrations. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
