Von der Verwendung von Schattenrissen in Märchenillustrationen des Fin de Siècle wie auch dem frühen expressionistischen Film ließ sich Stezaker nach eigener Aussage dazu anregen, in diesen Werken 'die Freude am Zeichnen' ebenso wiederzuentdecken wie 'die Kraft des Konturs, eine Trennlinie zwischen An- und Abwesenheit sowie dem Imaginären und dem Realen abzustecken'.
