Cowley was stripped of a Cambridge fellowship during the English Civil War and expelled for refusing to sign the Solemn League and Covenant of 1644. He accompanied Queen Henrietta Maria to France, spending 12 years in exile as her secretary. During this time, Cowley completed The Mistress (1647). Arguably his most famous work, the collection exemplifies Cowley's metaphysical style of love poetry. Brown hardback cloth spine on decorative marbled boards.

This is a quietly elegant Nonesuch Press revival… of Bishop Henry King's 17th-century verse, contemplating themes of love, loss and mortality, his verses provide a bridge between the sacred and the secular. Henry King (1592 - 1669) was an English poet who served as Bishop of Chichester. He was a close friend of John Donne, who made him one of his executors. He was also well acquainted with Ben Jonson, George Sandys, Sir Henry Blount, and James Howell. His friendship with Izaak Walton began about 1634, and was lifelong. Clark and printed…on Dutch rag paper in Monotype Bodoni for The Nonesuch Press. Original brown cloth binding. Abraham Cowley was an English poet born in the City of London late in 1618. He was one of the leading English poets of the 17th century, with fourteen printings of his Works published between 1668 and 1721. In 1647 a collection of his love verses, entitled 'The Mistress', was published. Tucked within the between the rear endpaper and rear board is a cutting of an article from The Sunday Times, published October 31st, 1926, by Edmund Gosse. This cutting lends additional insight to "accomplished and highly conscientious verse of Cowley". Original brown cloth binding. Externally, generally smart but with damp staining to spine and front board with minor damp staining to rear board. Slight loss to spine label. Internally, firmly bound. Abraham Cowley was a seventeenth-century…English poet, one of the most popular and influential of his era. Cowley showed poetical promise from a young age, publishing his first collection, 'Poetical Blossoms', in 1633, when he was fifteen. He went into exile as a Royalist during the Civil War, during which time he wrote a history of the Civil War. This collection includes 'The Mistress', 'Friendship in Absence', 'A Dream of Elysium', 'The Vain Love', 'The Rich Rival', 'My Fate', 'Impossibilities', 'Counsel', 'Sors Virgiliana', and many more. With a portrait of Abraham Cowley to the title page, drawn and engraved by John Hall from a painting from the collection of Horace Walpole. The Nonesuch Press specialised in limited edition and private press. They were founded by Francis Meynell, his second wife Vera Mendel and their friend David Garnett. Their aspiration was for their publications to be aligned with the same aesthetic standards as the private press movement. They were unusual as they used a small Albion press to design the books, but had them printed by commercial printers. Books with the quality of a fine-press were produced, but available to a wider audience at lower prices. In the publisher's original cloth binding.
