Green cloth covered slipcase in very good condition with a little rubbing to edges. The book itself is bound in half green morocco leather over green cloth boards with gilt titles and stag heads to spine and stags head to front board in circular inlay. Binding in very good+ condition with a little fading to gilt on spine along with a touch of sunning. Inside all pages with full edge gilt in lovely near fine condition. A very nice copy of this signed limited edition originally published in two volumes in 1848. Signed by Illustrator(s).

Tinted frontispiece to each volume. Red cloth, spine titled in gilt, coat-of-arms in gilt to blind-stamped boards. A good two-volume set, both volumes professionally recased in original publisher's cloth, foxing, especially of tissue-guards, light stains to cloth. The Allen brothers were born in Wales in the late 18th century. They were later to claim to be the grandsons of Bonnie Prince Charlie, Charles Edward Stuart, 1720-1788, and in the 1871 census claimed their birthplace as Versailles. The pseudonyms for the two brothers are ".extremely confusing, and there is conflicting information about [them] from all sources, including the venerable Dictionary of National Biography. To compound the issue, these same sources seem to repeatedly confuse the two brothers and their various names. What is agreed upon is that the brothers were enamored with the lore of Scotland, and invented an elaborate genealogical record, which changed and was added to throughout their lives." (Callahan). They are the authors of the notorious Vestiarium Scoticum, a book claiming to be based upon a 16th century manuscript on Scottish tartans that was soon revealed as a forgery. .

John Sobieski Stolberg Stuart (1795?Ð1872), and Charles Edward Stuart (1799?Ð1880), impostors and forgers, were brothers who claimed to be the heirs of Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Chevalier. Their father was Thomas Gatehouse Allen, a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. The brothers' pretensions were based on the belief that Thomas Gatehouse Allen was not the son of his supposed father, Admiral John Carter Allen, but was in fact the legitimate son of the Young Chevalier and his wife, born in Italy and fostered by the admiral. "By their own account, they discovered the 'truth' of their birth in 1811, and promptly offered their services to Napoleon, fighting at Dresden and Leipzig in 1813, and again at Waterloo, where they claimed to have been personally decorated by Napoleon. The date of their first appearance in Scotland is unknown, but they were certainly there with their father in 1822 at the time of George IV's visit to Edinburgh. They threw themselves fervently into the acquisition of Scottish culture, and Scotticised their name first to Allan, then to Hay Allan, and then to Hay, encouraging the belief that they were related to the last Hay earl of Erroll."ÑOxford DNB. Under the name of John Hay Allen, the elder brother published The bridal of Calchairn in 1822; a "fifth" edition appeared in the same year attributed on the title-page to Walter Scott. The last eighty pages comprise prose notes on the poems, which are almost wholly on matters of Scottish history and tradition. In 1829 they announced that they had found what purported to be a late fifteenth-century manuscript, entitled the Vestiarium Scoticum, or, the Garde-Robe of Scotland, depicting the clan tartans of Scottish families, but when they refused to allow anyone to see the object it was dismissed as a fantasy. In 1842, the brothers published their supposed manuscript in a limited edition of fifty, and in 1844 produced another volume, The costume of the clans, in which they set out to demonstrate that the Catholic, Celtic Scotland of the middle ages had been part of a sophisticated and rich culture; "as Hugh Trevor-Roper has demonstrated, they saw themselves as living embodiments of the revival not just of highland dress, but of an entire, vanished civilization. The Costume of the Clans was a work of immense scholarship, drawing on a wide variety of disciplines and arcane sources; it was, none the less, 'shot through with pure fantasy and bare-faced forgery.'"ÑOxford DNB.

A very scarce early edition of this historical work from John Carter Allen and Charles Manning Allen, siblings and pretenders to the Scottish throne, who adopted the Sobieski Stuart name in the late 1830s, claiming their descent Bonnie Prince Charlie.Illustrated with a lithographic frontispiece, and in a bright quarter morocco binding.First published in 1847, within the work the brothers detail three scenes in recent history which, taken together, suggest that their father was the child of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and Louise of Stolberg. The work was swiftly characterised by historians as one of 'solemn self projection', and not based in reality.The final three-hundred pages, are composed of copious historical notes, aiming to prove the voracity of their claims.With the bookplate of J. L. Weir to the front pastedown.A bright copy of a very scarce early edition of this curious work of historical myth. Rebound in quarter morocco, with marbled paper covered boards, and endpapers renewed. Light fading to back strip, otherwise externally fine. 7.5 x 4, full leather, 230 pp, 300 pp notes, lithographed frontis piece, gilt decorated red morocco, signed binding by Larkins, edge worn, front hinge tender, bookplate, spine labels gone, written by two pretend claimants to descent from Bonnie Prince Charlie (Charles Stuart, who promoted Scottish nationalism). This series of short stories on Romans is presented as a justification of their descent. The rear of the book has several contemporary newspaper articles tipped to blank pages related to the book and its authors. Also a manuscript letter signed by Sobieska Louise de Plat nee Stuart Comtesse d'Albanie, a daughter of the junior author, requesting donations for a school in Bucharest also a printed broadside from the Archbishop of Bucharest in support of her endeavors. First published in 1847, this is an early printing with some great association pieces tipped in. EARLY PRINTING.

The second volume from which the text of this book is drawn. It contains fascinating descriptions of deer stalking as it was practiced at that time both in the Highlands and on the Continent.
