Folded for postage. In Ellis's disciplined and attractive hand. Addressed to 'William James Smith Esqr / &c &c &c' and signed 'Henry Ellis.' He begins… by apologising for the delayed response, then writes: 'Pray accept my kind and sincere Thanks for the two beautiful and splendid Numbers of the "Historical and Literary Curiosities": I only wish that your poor brother had lived himself to have sent them to me.' (C. J. Smith had died of 'paralysis' on 23 November 1838.) He ends by offering his aid 'in any literary or other services here' ('fail not to put me in requisition')', adding: 'I shall be much pleased at all times to transfer the kindness I had for your brother to yourself.'.

Smith writes: 'Sir | I have sent you an impression of Sr. Francis Burdett for your portfolio & one in an unfinished state of Mr. Tooke which the bearer will bring back or call again for & a compleat impression shall be sent you in a ten day, as soon as they can be printed, the plate is finished but none taken off yet, the unfinished one will do for a certain purpose & a finished one much the better for your portfolio'.

The article is too late for the next number, 'the difficulty being the engravings'. 'If you dont mind I think I should…like to give your article the "place of honour" - ie the opening article - in the following number'. He would have written back sooner, 'but the truth is Mrs Jewitt and Beatrice have been away for a month, and they came home on Monday and so have driven off all remembrance of my having to write!!'.
