Zustand: Very Good Minus. Complete two volume set. Publisher's blind stamped maroon leather bindings. All edges gilt. Rubbing to edges of boards and spines. Wear to corners. Good solid bindings with no cracking to joints. Frontis and engraved title page (dated 1835) followed by letterpress title page (dated 1834). Numerous plates, each with five steel engravings (300 engravings in total). Tissue guard to each plate. Patches of foxing and occasional marks to the text and plates. Overall condition is Very Good Minus. Size: 6 x 9.5 inches (15 x 24 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: Large 8vo. viii, 208; viii, 216.

Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. Original hand-coloured map of London from 1835. Drawn and engraved by John Shury of Charterhouse Street, London. Scale is 3.75 inches to 1 mile (approx. 1:16900). Approximate sheet size: 81.5 x 55.5 cm (32 x 21.75 inches). Approximate map size (excluding all borders) 58.8 x 38.1 cm (23 x 15 inches). Border with 33 engravings of London landmarks. Hand-coloured boundaries for City of London; Southwark; City of Westminster; and New Boroughs. Hand-colouring to the River Thames and all major routes. Shows the proposed route of London's first railway - The London & Greenwich Railway, running South-East from the junction of London Bridge and Tooley Street. The London Bridge station was eventually opened in December 1836. The map is complete and in original condition, without any repairs or restoration. Some light foxing. Light browning to edges and folds. Short tear to lower end of central fold, slightly affecting the engraving of St. Paul's Cathedral. Short tear and crease to hinge on left-hand side, slightly affecting the engraving of St. James's Palace. Slight wear to edge of right-hand margin. An attractive and very detailed London map, one of the very last to be issued before the arrival of the railways. Overall condition is Very Good. Size: 32 x 21.75 inches (81.5 x 55.5 cm).

From the first edition of Thomas Tegg's 'A London Encyclopaedia' Engraved map. A map of Japan from the first edition of Thomas Tegg's 'A London Encyclopaedia, or Universal Dictionary'. The publisher, Thomas Tegg (1776-1845), began his publishing career as an apprentice to Alexander Meggett, a book-seller in Dalkeith. After an itinerant life selling chapbooks in Berwick, working for the editor of the Sheffield Register and travelling in Ireland and Wales, he moved to London in 1796. He found success in publishing pamphlets containing abridgements of popular works; he sold fifty thousand copies of a work on the life of Nelson after the Battle of Trafalgar. 'A London Encyclopedia' was published twice in 22 volumes in 1829 and 1839.

Map of London surrounded by a decorative border, the map's title appears in a panel above the plan, with the Royal arms and arms of the Cities of London and Westminster. Inset within the border are illustrations of prominent buildings and landmarks, including the Bank of England, Lambeth Palace, Covent Garden and Waterloo Bridge. The map shows the intended tunnel under the Thames linking Wapping and Rotherhithe, the first underwater tunnel in the world when it opened in 1843., Size : 544x816 (mm), 21.42x32.13 (Inches), Hand Colored Very Good, backed on acid free tissue paper for long term preservation.
