Zustand: Very good. - A 3-1/2 inch high by 4-1/8 inch wide card signed & dated by the great British screen & stage actor John Gielgud, with his sentiments: "John Gielgud / best wishes 1942". Once likely mounted in an album, there are paper & glue remnants adhering to one edge of the verso. A vertical crease at right touches on the date but not the signature. Very good. The great British actor Sir John Gielgud (1904-2000) dominated the British stage for much of the 20th century as both an actor and director. Considered by many as the finest Hamlet of his era, he also starred and played supporting roles in movies. From September 1936 through February 1937, Gielgud starred as Hamlet in North America, opening first in Toronto before moving on to perform in New York and Boston.

The surrender marked the end of the regiment and overshadowed its reputation. John Screen's book is the history of the two battalions of the regiment stationed in Viapori from 1772. to 18o8. It is based on the considerable surviving archive material, especially the regiment's muster rolls, as well as other records and literature. This book describes the organisation, personnel and duties of the regiment, including its active service, and builds up a picture of daily life on Viapori for soldiers and officers. This study reveals that the Queen Dowager's Life Regiment was a competent unit which merited a better fate.

It considers the organization of the army and its role in the defence of Finland. Regimental records and official regulations have been used to illustrate the armys peacetime routine, which for the majority of officers and soldiers comprised a life as farmers punctuated by periods of training and public works. Subjects covered in the book range from discipline to uniforms. Special attention is paid to how an army whose official language was Swedish interacted with its Finnish-speaking soldiers. The book concludes with an examination of the mobilization of the army, its performance in war and effectiveness as a fighting force.

He begins in conventional fashion, with a reference to 'Herman's countless friends', before continuing: 'As I write this there is in front of me part of a small collection of books I have each containing some personal inscription from its famous author. Among them is one from Herman. He had thought of me one evening, &, with his usual kindliness, he took a book from his collection, wrote in it, & brought it to me there & then. He spent most of that evening in my dressing room. - the last time I saw him. I am indeed proud to be called by him "my dear friend John"'. Roberts first appeared on stage in 1909. His first film was The Constant Nymph (1928). Other films were Night Train to Munich (1940) and Spitfire (1942). He also appeared in the BBC television series The Warden (1951). Finck's 'In the Shadows' was one of the last songs played as RMS Titanic went down.

He apologises for not answering her letter sooner, but he has been 'buried in a film studio for the past four months'. She will know that the film he is working on is 'Green for Danger'. The film has a planned autumn release. He is glad she liked the film of Shakespeare's 'Henry V': 'It is not surprising that you haven't seen me before as it was my first picture since the beginning of the war, as the Army took up most of my time.' He would prefer 'a stage appearance' to 'film making', but there is 'little hope', as he is 'tied up with pictures until sometime early next year, except that I hope to do the sequel to the "Men of Property," when it is done on the air in November'. He is not sure he understands her 'distinction between strong parts and the hero type of role', but he has always 'played what I imagine you mean by strong stuff'. He ends with the news that he is sending her a signed photograph.

Single folded sheet, black and white printing. Creases where previously folded into thirds. A near fine example. John Barleycorn, originally an autobiographical novel written by Jack London in 1913, was adapted into a silent film in 1914. It portrayed London's journey with alcoholism and sobriety. The film has been "lost" for decades, meaning that there is no present day record of it in any studio archive, public archive, private collection, or in the Library of Congress. (AFI).
