First Edition. Crosbie, John S. The Incredible Mrs. Chadwick: The Most Notorious Woman of Her Age. Toronto: McGraw-Hill Ryerson, [1975]. First edition. 240 pp. 4 unnumbered leaves of plates. Publisher's black cloth very good, in moderately worn dust jacket. Internally clean. A very good copy. $20. * This book is a fictionalized biography of Cassie Chadwick (born Elizabeth "Betsy" Bigley), [1857-1907], one of the most audacious con artists in North American history. Her most famous scheme involved claiming to be the illegitimate daughter and heiress of steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. She used forged promissory notes with Carnegie's signature to defraud multiple U.S. banks of millions of dollars. The exposure of her fraud in 1904 led to the collapse of the Citizen's National Bank of Oberlin and caused shockwaves throughout the banking industry. She was convicted of conspiracy and forgery in 1905 and sentenced to 14 years in prison.
