The expedition was notable for its successful combination of aviation with traditional polar exploration techniques. In den WarenkorbZustand: Good. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A copy that has been read but remains in clean condition. All of the pages are intact and the cover is intact and the spine may show signs of wear. The book may have minor markings which are not specifically mentioned. A good condition vintage book. No dust jacket. The green cloth shows minor splits and some marks and scratches across the cover and spine. The spine is split down one edge and the spine label is peeling away. The boards feel very slightly loose. The textblock edges have tidemark-style stains and a little dust. The binding has a few shallow cracks and one notable crack beside the frontispiece but all pages are attached, and the internal contents show a typical amount of handling and age but remain fairly sturdy and unfaded for their age. Some page edges are tidemarked. A few interesting additions by a previous owner have been secured onto the endpapers and pastedowns, including a letter from a J. Bound in the Falkland Islands to a Colonel I. F. Meiklejohn in Yorkshire dated 1970, discussing radio communications in the Falklands. The ffep has just under a dozen signatures, and photographs in the rear pages that are potentially of the first Antarctic wireless radio equipment, going by the letter secured to the opposite page. A worn copy on the outside but fairly decent for it's age on the inside, with interesting adjacent history attached. More photographs available on request.

Provenance: Ownership inscription of G. Hattersley-Smith, Ottawa, 1/4/54, with associated ephemera and a 1977 TLS from expedition member Colin Bertram to Hattersley-Smith. An important expedition to the Antarctic peninsula, which confirmed that Graham Land was part of the continent and not an archipelago (as reported by Wilkins in his 1928-30 expedition). The narrative includes details of Rymill and Bingham s sledge journey, during which they set up camp at an altitude of 7500 feet next to Mount Wakefield, the highest mountain in the Graham Land range. This copy belonged to Geoffrey Hattersley-Smith, and contains obituaries and other items relating to members of the expedition. Hattersley-Smith was with Lord Shackleton a member of the Antarctic Place-Names Committee, and the letter from Colin Bertram ("Colin") reads "Dear Geoffrey, Many thanks for sending me the map, including the Bertram Glacier. I am very glad to have it now that the satellites have done their good work".

Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. London, Chatto and Windus, 1938 (first edition). Quarto, xvi, 296 pages with several maps and illustrations plus 81 pages of plates and 4 colour maps (3 folding). Green cloth with a contrasting gilt-lettered cloth label on the spine; top edge dyed green, bottom edge uncut; endpapers a little tanned, with early ownership details on the front free endpaper; an excellent copy with the very good unclipped dustwrapper (unevenly sunned, with a crease across the front panel and some loss along the top edge, affecting a few letters of the first word in the title on the spine and front cover). John Riddoch Rymill (1905-1968), polar explorer and farmer, was the leader of the expedition; he was born in Penola, South Australia, a grandson of the pioneer John Riddoch. 'Rymill's party proved that Graham Land was part of a continental extension (now the Antarctic Peninsula). They discovered a southern, permanently frozen channel, later named King George VI Sound, islanding Alexander I Land (now Alexander Island) and extending to the Bellingshausen Sea. The B.G.L.E. logistics were innovative in Antarctica. Outstanding sledging with dogs, especially over sea ice, was backed by air support and depot laying; the use of a motor launch probing ahead to plot a route for "Penola" through uncharted, rock-strewn waters, was original and successful. The "Penola" covered 26,896 miles (43,283 km) mostly under sail' ('Australian Dictionary of Biography').
