Zustand: Very Good. Nappanee, IN: E.V. Publishing House, 1939. First Edition. Signed by the author on front free endpaper with inscription "January 21, 1942. To Mr. Bernard Rosen in appreciation of his courteous treatment. J. Quincy Ames." Bookplate of Adele and Bernard Rosen on front pastedown. Octavo; 307pp. Publisher's green…cloth with silver lettering and decoration. Missing dust jacket. Boards lightly shelfworn, with fairly heavy darkening down spine and a few spots of fading and smudging to cloth. Front endpapers a bit toned. Book opens easily between a few gatherings, but binding is holding soundly. Pages unmarked. Subtitle describes the book as "An Autobiographical Reverie; Occasioned by extensive travel, the mingling with many people of several races in varied walks of life, and a deep interest in lifting the burdens of humanity." Ames worked with the YMCA in varying positions, both in the US and abroad, including acting as YMCA director with American troops in France during WWI, helping establish a YMCA branch in Russia, and serving as dean of George Williams College in Chicago (run by the YMCA), all while making time to travel the world before retiring to a family farm near Brooklyn, Wisconsin. His graduating thesis at YMCA College was titled The Cafeteria, an Aid to Welfare Work. Dedicatee Bernard Rosen similarly worked in education, teaching for 25 years at American University's school of public affairs after a federal career in administrative affairs. He and his wife Adele started a number of scholarships and endowments at American University and elsewhere. [Biographical Books 1876-1949 p. 1403].
