Zustand: Good. - Octavo, softcover bound in printed cream wrappers. The binding is lightly foxed & soiled with the spine slightly darkened. 96 pages. The contents are very good. The publisher notes that this is an abridged reproduction of the English portion of "The Compleat Herbal of Physical Plants" compiled by John Pechey of the London College of Physicians. It was printed at the Red Lion, in St. Paul's Churchyard, in 1694 and published the same year.

Full-Leather. Zustand: Good. Second edition. "The Second edition, with the addition of many physical herbs and their vertues". 12mo (measures 165mm x 105mm), pp (6), 349, (29) (though errors in pagination mean that there are actually 411 pages of main text), a little used and marked throughout, the contemporary signature of an early owner on the blank facing the title page (Wm Brecknock - his book - 1714), and his signature again on the preface page, the front endpaper very nearly detached and the hinge at the title page cracked but very sound, lacking the rear endpaper. Contemporary panelled calf, joints rubbed, worn through at the corners, lacking a few small portions around the spine. From the estate of the collector and bibliographer Norman Douglas Simpson with his bookplate and his presentation label on the front endpaper. RARE. [Blanche Henrey 288.].

pp.[16], 390, plus 2-pages of adverts. 8vo. Hardback. Cancelled stamp of Middlesex Hospital (and minor mark) to title and first page of index, further private ownership stamp to front pastedown. Old mark to bottom margin of sigs. Y to end, o/w. contents exceptionally clean and nr. fine. Twentieth century half-calf, spine gilt lettered in nr. fine condition. Very scarce. Pechey was a London physician and the first part of this work sees him providing an insight into the art of physick. The second part is herbal describing the virtues of plants, animals and minerals and Pechey concludes the work with 'A different way of making the most celebrated Compositions in the Apothecaries Shops'.

Bookplate of the physician Otto Orren Fisher. Sydenham (1624-1689) made great strides in medical science, and his Observationes Medicae became a standard textbook of medicine for two centuries after his death. The topics in this wide-ranging text include therapies for various fevers, plague, and St. Vitus's Dance (now called Sydenham's chorea). He also promoted laudanum for relief from pain. A translation of Sydenham's "Methodus curandi febres," first published in 1696. Tenth edition, corrected from the original Latin.

Containing all such English and Foreign Herbs, Shrubs and Trees, as are used in Physick and Surgery. And to the Vertues that are now in use, is added one Receipt or more, of some Learned Physician. The Doses or Quantities of such as are prescribed by the London-Physicians, and others, are proportioned.The Second Edition with the Addition of many Physical Herbs, and their  Vertues.   Second Edition. Small 8vo (156 x 92mm). [8], 349 [i.e.411], [29] pp., interleaved throughout and annotated extensively by a number of different early hands (some of the ink annotations slightly bled). Some staining in the inner margin but otherwise a good copy. 18th-century sheep, covers ruled in and tooled in blind, spine divided by four bands, plain endpapers (headcaps missing, front flyleaf neatly torn away, a little rubbed and scuffed, presumably not a c contemporary binding as the notes have been cropped throughout, possibly when it was interleaved).    London: for R. and J. Bonwicke,  First published in 1694.    A working-copy of a herbal containing both domestic and foreign plants with numerous manuscript notes and additions by an early user.   John Pechey (1655-1716) confesses in his preface to this book that the work is largely based on the writings of John Ray: "What I have contributed to this Work, I confess, is the least Part" (A2r). Pechey defends himself though by noting that not everyone that practiced medicine in England was able to read medical texts in foreign languages. The book provides a useful little pocket guide with a detailed index and was obviously intended to be used on a day-to-day basis by both trained medical practitioners and amateurs, as this copy clearly was.   This copy has been interleaved throughout with thick laid paper but the blanks have not been used at all and instead the margins contain numerous manuscript notes on the naming of plants (often supplying the more common name) or drawing connections between two different plants and noting additional uses for certain treatments. The index has been heavily annotated and includes additional uses for the remedies that are not mentioned in the printed list such as for the, "belly to loosen", "blood vomitting", "cloths perfumed", "falling of ye womb" and pissing blood".
