The first edition of Nash and Scott's sweeping two-volume survey of early 19th century Paris, illustrated with fifty-seven engraved views of the city and its environs. In a contemporary half dark green morocco binding with marbled paper boards. First edition, two volumes bound in one. The first volume is dated 1820; the second was published in 1823. This copy retains the title page to volume I but lacks the volume II title page. Illustrated with fifty-seven engraved plates, some containing more than one subject, after the original drawings of Frederick Nash. Collated, plates are complete. Text in English and French, with the literary descriptions by John Scott and the French translation by M. P. B. de La Boissiere. A substantial illustrated survey of early 19th century Paris, with several views of the city's immediate environs. Among the subjects are the Louvre, the Seine, Tuileries, Palais Royal, Notre-Dame, the Pantheon, Versailles, Saint-Cloud, Pere Lachaise and the Paris catacombs. Frederick Nash (1782-1856) was an English architectural draughtsman and watercolourist. He began making the Paris drawings on which this publication was based around 1819. Slight rubbing and bumping to extremities, resulting in slight loss to morocco and paper, with loss heavier to corners. Previous owner's bookplate to front paste down. Slight rubbing to boards, resulting in very minor surface loss to paper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean if characteristically age toned with the odd light spot, heavier to fore edge and first and last few leaves. Scattered spotting to margins of plates. The present collection offers a window into the literary world of American poet and humorist Ogden Nash (1902-1971). It is comprised of 239 volumes published between 1886 and 1971, among which are numerous presentation and association copies. All books in the present collection come from the shared personal library of Ogden and Frances Nash. The collection spans poetry, humor, light verse, and literary criticism, and includes a significant number of first and limited editions, often in original bindings or dust jackets. Of particular note are six books inscribed by Nash to his wife, Frances (including five authored by Nash, one of which is in an "Author's Copy" half-leather binding). Included in the collection are 59 works by Nash, three of which feature edits to the text in Nash's hand. Twenty-seven of these Nash publications are Author's copies bound in half-leather. There are an additional 48 volumes bearing inscriptions to Nash from other authors and poets, most notably twelve volumes inscribed by S.J. Perelman. Among the 132 uninscribed volumes included here, 45 bear Ogden Nash's ownership inscription (10 bear the ownership inscription of Frances Nash). The number and range of authorial inscriptions represented in the present collections reflect Nash's wide-ranging literary friendships and professional associations.
