The questions which will be investigated are first, who supported him in his political career from its beginning, until his recognition by the Senate at the end of December, 69, and, second, why he, in particular, emerged as the restorer of order in the Roman empire. -- It is perhaps superfluous to acknowledge that this study would not have been possible without the Histories and Annals of Tacitus. Though this is not, in fact, a study of Tacitus, it will be immediately apparent to the reader how dependent I have been on that historians narrative and judgments in order to form my own conclusions about what happened. It is not my intention to attempt here an overall assessment of his work, but it might be observed that I find it to be both reliable, in comparison to other evidence, and internally consistent. -- I have organized this study into three parts. Part I concerns Vespasian as privatus and is intended not only to summarize Vespasians career, but also to estimate his position and influence on the eve of his appointment to the Jewish War. Part II provides a chronological framework for the events A. D. 67-70. In Part III, I have taken up the question of who supported Vespasian, and why. -- This book began as doctoral dissertation for the Department of History at the University of California, Los Angeles, ^ut was conceived and composed during my lengthy residence in the Seminar für Alte Geschichte at the Universität Freiburg. He is enclosing 'a Lecture Syllabus from Mr. Nicol, whom you may perhaps remember having seen meet me in the committee room on the day of my lecture'. Nicols wants Romanes to recommend him as a lecturer, but he only knows him 'from his book "Zoological Notes" which I reviewed in Nature. It was a good book & an entertaining one, but I know nothing of his capabilities as a lecturer.' 'Zoological Notes' by Arthur Nicols was published in London in 1883.
