In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Nash, John (illustrator). 1st Edition, Special Edition. The First UK printing published by Faber and Faber Limited, London in 1931. The special Limited edition, printed on Italian handmade paper. One of 170 numbered copies (of which only 150 were for sale), signed by both the author and the artist to the limitation page. This is copy 'no. 54'. 8vo., bound in full vellum with decorative device in gilt to upper board; spine ruled and lettered in gilt; upper edge gilt, else untrimmed; together in the original publisher's card slipcase; with title vignette and a further 8 full-page, full-colour illustrations by John Nash, as well as a final chapter vignette in black and white to p. [196]; The BOOK near Fine, being clean and bright internally with some very faint mottling to the end-papers ; the original publisher's plain cardslipcase has done a wonderful job of protecting the book, and is a little scuffed, split and discoloured, but holding firm. A collection of tales from 'The Connoisseur', 'Broomsticks' and 'The Riddle' which include 'Miss Duveen' (about a child who befriends a troubled soul), 'The Bird of Travel' (concerning a large house in the woods), 'The Tree' (about a rich fruit merchant), 'The Nap' (a comic tale about a father desperate for peace and quiet), 'Missing' (about secrets and a meeting with a stranger in a tea shop), 'The Wharf' (a young woman's dream of death) and 'Maria-Fly' (about a little girl's fascination by the little insect). The diverse stories are all wonderfully illuminated by the colourful illustrations by John Nash, founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers. A handsome production. Scarce, especially so in the slipcase. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Illustrator(s).

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The sole UK printing published by The Golden Cockerel Press, UK in 1935. This is number '32' of 60 specially-bound copies signed by the author to the limitation page, from a total edition of 325 copies [Chanticleer 106]. The BOOK is in near Fine condition, bound in the publisher's original green morocco, by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with gilt titling to the spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. A hint of offsetting to the blank end-papers. A wood-engraved pictorial title and 4 striking B/W plates by John Nash. With an additional suite of the 4 B/W wood-engraved plates on Japon, each signed in pencil by John Nash, loose in a paper envelope. The plates are in Fine condition with just a hint of creasing to the extreme outer edges of one of the plates. With the publisher's Prospectus loosely laid in, which contains one specimen plate. Although the prospectus does not mention this, the separate suite of wood engravings were only issued in a limitation of 12 sets and were unnumbered and signed by the illustrator ( 1.25 Clare Colvin : John Nash Book Designs :1986). The set accompanying this book is clearly one of the scarce 12 sets. Housed in a custom cloth solander box with a leather titled label to spine. A very handsome production and extremely elusive with such attributes. Only the second copy we have handled. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
