"A look into Richard Prince's private library and his influences, published on the occasion of an exhibition of the artist's work at the Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris. Artist Richard Prince is renowned for appropriating icons that capture the American cultural zeitgeist, such as Marlboro cowboys, femme-fatale nurses, and muscle cars. Prince is also a bibliophile, collecting rare volumes published from 1949 to 1984 which include Naked Lunch, Jack Kerouac's rolled manuscript for Big Sur, and editions of Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita in several languages. An exhibition at the Bibliotheque nationale de France, Paris, presents rare books selected by the artist from its collection alongside Prince's artwork. RICHARD PRINCE: AMERICAN PRAYER is an accompanying volume that offers a rare glimpse into Prince's intellectual explorations, revealing the source material for many of his well-known series through the pairing of literary excerpts and complementary illustrations of artwork." [publisher copy] Near Fine & pristine paperback w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, French flaps, a square & tight binding w/no creases in spine.

Terry Richardson (illustrator). 48 pp.; 29.8 x 23 cm.; sewn bound; black-and-white & color; edition size 1000; unsigned and unnumbered; offset-printed Artist's book / exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with show held at Glenn Horowitz Bookseller, East Hampton, NY, August 12- September 16, 2006. Includes a text by John McWhinnie. "These pictures by Terry Richardson may be worth only 999 words - but who is counting? And who cares? Any way you add it up it amounts to the same thing: absolutely nothing. We're born. We die. In between there's school and work. When you are a teenager that's an adult truth you learn with your skin, whether you ink, scab or score it. And these kids, Richardson and his mates, denizens of Ojai, California's youth scene ca. early nineteen eighties, make the best of these existential bookends by raging with the machinery of their choice: music fueled by electric guitars, drum kits, juiced amps, alcohol and attitude. In the primitive mosh pits of the SSA (Signal Street Alcoholics, Richardson's crew) there's nothing but life, even if it's spinning, in some cases, headlong into oblivion. Or boredom. Kids with an attitude going anywhere fast: a new generation of holy goofs and angry outsiders that appear to parents merely as teenagers in trouble. But from the perspective of rock-n-roll high school, the only perspective that counts, it's an age when nothing matters and everything makes a difference. When there is such a thing as no future and plenty of time to figure it out, fuck it up or wait for it to happen: when you are styling your hair and your identity to avoid merely going with the flow. Richardson's photographs remind you that everybody was trying to be unique and looking remarkably similar. But that was the point of this the rebel cry: to be you and nobody else, but to do it in a way that gathered simpatico with like haircuts and frayed t-shirts into basements to strike similar chords. Three chords, three minutes. D.I.Y. It was also something more. Posturing? Yes. Not naive or innocent, not worldly either, but some attitude that embodied them both in the beginning of a worldly awareness. It was a punk worldview that gave the finger to everything in its way."--from McWhinnie's text. Fine. Contents clean and unmarked.
