Soft cover. Zustand: New. The book 'Ancient India as Described by Ktesian the Knidian' by John W. McCrindle offers a unique perspective on India through the lens of Ktesias, a native of Knidos and a member of the Asklêpiadai, a priestly caste with a hereditary profession in medicine. Ktesias, a contemporary of Hippocrates, spent 17 years in Persia, serving as a physician to the royal court under Darius II and Artaxerxes Mnemon. Among Ktesias's various works, the most significant was his history of Persia, written in 23 books. Unfortunately, this work is lost, but Phôtios provided a brief abstract of its contents. Another notable work was the 'Indika' focused on India, which is also lost but abridged by Phôtios, with fragments preserved by other writers like Elian. Ktesias's 'Indika' aimed to capture India's essence, drawing from reports of Persian officials and possibly Indian sources.…

Soft cover. Zustand: As New. Ancient India is a collection of personal accounts written by Megasthenes and Arrian. This is a classic text on the ancient geography of India translated in English by John W. McCrindle. The account of India written by Megasthenes from his personal knowledge of the country is justly held to be almost invaluable for the light which it throws upon the obscurity of early Indian history. A translation of the first part of the Indika of Arrian has been subjoined, both because it gives in a connected form a general description of India, and because that description was based chiefly on the work of Megasthenes.…

Soft cover. Zustand: New. This book contains the best account of the commerce carried on from the Red Sea and the coast of Africa to the East Indies during the time that Egypt was a province of the Roman empire. The Erythraean Sea was an appellation given in those days to the whole expanse of ocean reaching from the coast of Africa to the utmost boundary of ancient knowledge on the East - an appellation in all appearance deduced from the entrance into it by the Straits of the Red Sea, styled Erythra by the Greeks, and not excluding the Gulf of Persia. Soft cover. Zustand: New. Ancient India as described in Classical Literature is a collection of Greek and Latin texts relating to India extracted from numerous sources, such as the Histories of Herodotus, Polybius, Diodorus Siculus, and Dion Cassius; the Geographies of Strabo and Dionysius Periegetes; the Natural History of Pliny, the Christian Topography of Kosmas Indikopleustes, the Life of Apollonius of Tyana by Philostratus; the Romance History of Alexander; and Notices in Aelian, Nonnus, Porphyry, Stobaeus, Dion Chrysostom, Eusebius, and others. Though the extracts have not been arranged in accordance with any fixed principle, as that of their chronology, yet some of them have been placed side by side as treating in the main of the same subjects. While the present book is crucial for the students, researchers and teachers of Ancient History, it will prove to be an interesting read for a layperson alike. *******John W. McCrindle was a Scottish classical philologist and educator who wrote several major works on references to India in ancient classical writings. He taught at Patna College and later at Krishnagar College.*******.…
