In den WarenkorbMacLane, John Fisher. A Sagebrush Lawyer. New York: Pandick Press, 1954, c1953. viii, 177 pp. 7 unnumbered leaves of plates: illustrations, portrait. Original blue cloth with gilt stamped spine and front cover. Top edge slightly frayed, rear board stained and lightly scuffed. Very good, in an edge worn dust jacket. Internally cl…ean and bright. $65. * This is a biography of James H. Hawley (1847-1929), a prominent figure in Idaho's legal and political history. Written by John Fisher MacLane (1878-1959), the book chronicles Hawley's life as a pioneer lawyer, prosecutor, and the ninth Governor of Idaho. It details Hawley's career as a "sagebrush lawyer" during Idaho's transition from a frontier territory to a state. The narrative covers Hawley's service as Governor of Idaho (1911-1913) and his influence on state politics and government. Hawley was notably the lead prosecutor in the 1907 trial of labor leader Bill Haywood for the assassination of former Governor Frank Steunenberg, a landmark case in American labor history. The book explores the challenges of practicing law in the American West during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
