Ballantyne. `The Evangelical Church of North America in Oregon and Washington wasformed in Portland, Oregon on June 4, 1968. The Western Conference was organized on June 15 of the same year.Both conferences were founded by those ch…urches which in their respective areas had been part of the former Evangelical United Brethren Church. At that time, instead of moving the the direction of a union between the Methodist and Evangelical United Brethren Church, they formed their own denomination. In March 1969 the Holiness Methodist Church voted to become a part of the Evangelical Church of North America. Eleven of these churches, located in the mid-western states, became the North Central Conference which had under its jurisdiction the supervision and support of the Bolivian Holiness Mission. Concluding several years of discussions,the Wesleyan Covenant Church heldits final annual conference in August 1977, and united with The Evangelical Church.' (p. 3-4) By 1978 there were five conferences: Pacific, Western (incl. for work among Navajo Indians in New Mexico), North Central, Eastern and East Central. `The new Discipline was adopted in 1981 by action of the Annual Conferences in both the United States and Canada, thus approving church union. The union became operative on April 15, 1982, by action of the Council of Superintendents' including Leroy Myers of the Northwest Canada Conference (p. 5) In 1982 the Southeastern Conference included Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina. `Thus as of December 31, 1981 the membership of The Evangelical Church.totaled 17,170.'
