The first edition of this poetry collection. In the publisher's original boards. Several leaves remain uncut to the top edge. Signed to the half-title by the author with the dedication, 'Mr Fitchett with the sincere esteem of the Author'. The first edition of this collection. Lewes is regarded as a minor poet of this period. However, his family members are well-known. Lewes' father played many minor roles in the Covent Garden theatre before finding his first important role as Young Marlow in 'She Stoops to Conquer'. During his time at Drury Lane, Lewes played many Shakespearean parts. Upon his death, John Lee Lewes published his memoirs. George Henry Lewes was John's illegitimate son. George was an English philosopher and theatre critic known for his relationship with Mary Ann Evans. With a frontispiece. A large selection of nineteenth century poems, touching on subjects such as William Wallace and Keswick. In the publisher's original boards. Externally, rubbed to the spine, where there is some loss to the head and tail. Light marks to boards. Front joint and hinge are strained but firm. Author's inscription to the half-title. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright. Very small closed tear to the edge of page 144, no larger than half a centimetre. Just the odd spots to pages. Good. signed by author. book.
