Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good+ dj. First Edition. [slight damage to lower corners (both book and jacket), but otherwise a nice copy, with the usual age-toning to the jacket (most pronounced on the spine)]. (3 B&W photographs) The book and lyrics (no music) to this modern classic, the only musical play (OK, operetta) that Hellman ever wrote -- although (per Wikipedia) "since 1974 it has been generally performed with a book by Hugh Wheeler, which is more faithful to Voltaire's novel." (Bernstein's music, thankfully, endures.).

In den WarenkorbCloth. Zustand: Good. T. Sotheran Estcourt (illustrator). The second edition of this illustrated account of an Englishman's travels in Europe in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The second edition of this travelogue from John Latouche, the pseudonym of John Crawford. With five illustrated plates, each protected by the original tissue guard, from T. Sotheran Estcourt. Collated, complete. The author's preface explains that this work is 'nothing more than notes - mental notes, for I travelled without any design of future publications, and kept no single written memorandum of what I did or saw'.From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an extravagant socialite and renowned beauty of the Edwardian period. Impeccably connected, Pleydell-Bouverie was also the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, and rumoured to be a lover of King Edward VIII. A sparkling figure of fashionable society, her friends included Nancy Mitford, Coco Chanel, Winston Churchill, and Fred Astaire. This work is from the sale of Pleydell-Bouverie"s library at Julians Park, Hertfordshire. She purchased the home in 1940, redesigning the interior and amassing an impressive library, featuring many examples of her own bookbinding. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, smart. Discolouration to back strip, with bumping to spine head and tail. Hinges starting, with boards held to text block by cords only. Internally, binding strained. Pages clean and bright. Good. book.

Unbound. Zustand: Good. Two mimeographed leaves printed rectos only. Legal size. 8.5" x 14". Decorated with vignettes of the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell. Old staple holes (now separated), old folds, small tears, a good copy. The "Ballad for Americans" was written for the Federal Theatre Project production, *Sing for Your Supper* in 1939, entitled "The Ballad for Uncle Sam", but the Project was soon thereafter canceled. Norman Corwin had the name changed and arranged for it to be sung by Paul Robeson in November of 1939, and it was met with such acclaim that arrangements were made to record his radio performance of the song. This version bears no publication information, but seems likely to have been produced in some proximity to the release of the song.
