In den Warenkorb4to, pp. 16; title a little dusty; disbound. First and only authorised edition of this self-justifying pamphlet by the cleric John Kidgell (1722-80). Kidgell had been closely involved in the government's procuring a copy of John Wilkes's obscene poem An Essay on Woman, so that the author's political career could be spiked. Kidgell, who probably acted for money rather than principle, found himself blamed by the Wilkes party on the one hand, and disowned by his friends on the other. In this work he attempts to paint himself as an unwilling participant, horrified at the 'most horrid Impiety and Profaneness that had ever yet disgraced our Religion, our Language, or our Laws'; yet he gives such a detailed account of the printed work (which hardly anyone had seen) that it seems more like an advertisement than a denunciation: 'The Frontispiece, engraven curiously on Copper, contains the Title of the Poem. A Motto, very suitable to a Work, which is calculated to depreciate the Sex; a most obscene Print, by Way of Decoration. Beneath that Inscription; something too scandalous and defamatory of private Character, to endure a Repetition' (pp. 9-10). We know this edition to be authorised by Kidgell because this is one of the copies he signed on the title page possibly to differentiate it from the 13pp edition issued the same year, with no imprint (and spelling 'succint' on the title page).

In den WarenkorbLondon/ Brussels, the author/ A. Collaer and J. van Doren, 1772, 2 volumes, titles and text in French and English, titles with engraved devices, 94 engravings in the text, 2 engraved coats of arms, 2 engraved tail-pieces in volume one, contemporary uniform calf, spine gilt with 2 contrasting morocco title-shields, all edges dyed red, small octavo (16,6 x 10,3 cm.). = Osborne Coll. II, p.568; cf. The Children's World of Learning 3142 (1st ed., 1763); Lowndes, III, 1269. Not in Landwehr, ONE OF THE EARLIEST COLOURING BOOKS FOR CHILDREN. The 94 fables appear in both French and English (with the French printed on the left hand side and the English on the opposite right), each accompanied by an outline illustration, which are believed to provide the earliest example of outline illustrations for children to colour, although the quality of the prose, not to mention the sophistication of some of the satire, may have been beyond the full appreciation of younger readers. The illustration to each of the ninety-four fables is a firm and able outline etching, perhaps inspired by fifteenth-century editions of Aesop and their outline woodcuts. The etchings are small, and some with human figures seem almost too detailed for colouring, but the outline of animals is simple and bold. When Kidgell, in exile for his debts, reissued the original sheets in Brussels in 1772 with new preliminaries, the new title-page points explicitly to this feature. No child has, however, spruced up (or defaced if you like) this fine set. Kidgell intended to publish the book in 1763, but - according to rumour - George III was so offended by the text that he bought up the entirety of the first edition to prevent its circulation. Kidgell was not deterred however, and simply reissued his book privately in 1764. Shortly afterwards, Kidgell was forced to flee England as a result of the crucial role he played in the Wilkes affair of November 1763. It was he who secured the sheets of Wilkes' Essay on Woman from his private press printer and supplied them to the Earl of Sandwich, an action which brought him disfavour from all sides in the dispute. In exile and poverty, Kidgell reissued his Fables once again in Brussels in 1772 with a new title-page reading "Original Fables. adorned with copper plates very proper for to colour". Our copy being this reissue, with different title-pages and preliminary leaves of the 1763 edition. Published anonymously, by John Kidgell. Pages 272-77 are misnumbered. Fine copy.
