Small biographical slip laid down at top left. Addressed to 'Dear Colonel Fellows' and signed 'John Murray junr.' Reads: 'Our binders have done the best they can with your Volumes, short of rebinding, but as you know patching up leather bindings in a really satisfactory way is not easy. / However, I hope that you will be satisfied with the volumes which I am sending on to you today.'. …

12mo, 4 pp. 40 lines. Text clear and complete. Good, on lightly-aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Spencer'. He is sorry to have missed Childers: 'I came back early on Sat: morning fairly driven home by the weather.' Reports that 'Better reviews of the book are now appearing Athenaeum - evidently by Dilke: Tablet: Pall Mall &c.' Thinks 'Clarke will use his influence with the Times', the idea that 'King' has done so being 'entirely out of the question'. He does not 'suppose there is a word of truth in that paragraph in Modern Society', a paper about which he knows nothing: 'from its print & style it seems pretty low'. 'If such a statement had appeared in any reputable quarter, it might have been worth while writing to say that the Queen had given full permission - but I wd not condescend to correct "Modern Society".' The rest of the letter refers to a visit by 'Jack' (his son John Murray V) to 'Hugh' and 'Dorothy'.…

"I have not heard of or from you for sometime past, but I now write to tell you that my son John Murray the fifth, starts for a journey round the world, or nearly so, on the 25th and that I propose to give him a letter of introduction to you. He was at Eton & took his degree (with Honours) at Magdalen College, Oxford. He is now working with me here in the business & is a Lieut. in a Yeomanry regiment,The Scottish Horse. | His companion is Norman Chamberlain a nephew of our Ex-Colonial Minister. | They may be a day or two in Boston in Sept: or Oct but it is more likely that they will be there, if all goes well on their return journey next May - after visiting Japan China India &c. | We always regret that your visit to England was cut short, and wrote you would come over & finish it. [.]"; LETTER TWO: (13 March 1907) One page, cr.8vo, one edge ragged, small closed tear, ow fair-good & complete. Text: "[.] Jack has been touring in India, Burma, Ceylon China Japan &c & hopes to return via San Francisco in May. His stay in the Eastern states was unavoidably curtailed to a day or two on his way out, but he hopes to have more leisure on his return. | I am sorry to say we have no portraits of my Grandmother, or of Archibald Murray, or of Allegra [Byron's illegitimate daughter]. I send two copies of a private plate of the 5 John Murrays in the hope that it may be of some use to you, and also a few autographs. Jack tells me that you have a portrait of me which shocks him: the subject is not a good one and consequently you cannot expect a photograph to make much of it, but Jack insists onmy sending you one to supercede the scarecrow so I am inflicting myself upon you by this post. | Thirdly I must thank you for your kind letter of May 20, which I was very glad to receive. | Jack goes off to night into camp with his Yeomanry for 3 weeks.
