"This book presents eighteen revealing interviews, public and private, in which Robert Penn Warren participated between 1950 and 1978. The editors' introduction gives an indication of their nature and significance: [] 'The interviews of Red Warren reveal much of this man who is so concealed in his writings. They involve talking, much of it spontaneous, little of it planned. They have no direction predetermined except the lives, interests, and personalities of the speakers. The shifts of direction may be sudden. Warren may thrust a spear deep into the waters of the past and snag a thought which he had forgotten for decades. The interview just as quickly may shift to some principle to which Warren has adhered deeply for all the years. Or life on the street or in the cloakroom may furnish him with an anecdote that ends with a chuckle and proceeds to shaking laughter and finally to new light on new issues and events. He sometimes twists a question and makes a reply which provides a new meaning without destroying the point of the questioner. So the personal Warren may be known more in his interviews than in anything else he has presented for public view. The final result is that the reader sees a complex but genuine and important person and comprehends more than ever the views of the man and the art and the meanings of his works."
