In den WarenkorbFive tracts in one volume. Dropped-head titles. Octavo, variously pp., 17, 31, 34, 82, 22. Pebbled racing-green cloth, title gilt to red leather book label to spine. Ownership inscription of 'H. T. Rendell, 1900' to front free paste-down. Light water damage to upper board, and to margin of first 4 leaves, corners bumped, spine-t…ips wearing. Very occasional light and scattered foxing internally. Overall, a very good copy. A series of reports by eminent railway engineers, on the opening of the Great Western Railway, which first ran trains in 1838. The parts within discuss, in some depth, Brunel's choice to use broad gauge rails, and include tables reporting on the performance of different locomotives, the cost of running trains, and both the financial and engineering considerations made in the design and construction of the GWR. Within the reports, the authors reproduce correspondence from other railway engineers, including George Smith and Robert Stephenson. The former owner of this copy, H. T. Rendell was himself a locomotive engineer for the Great Western Railway (Institute of Mechanical Engineers: IME/7/32/1/196). A comprehensive and fascinating record of the engineering challenges behind the establishment of one of England's great railway lines. Rare, COPAC locates 2 copies only with all 5 parts, at the British Library and the National Railway Museum.

In den WarenkorbChicago: The Eagle Publishing Company, 1890. A Sensational-And Seemingly Unrecorded-Fictionalized Account of the "Swamp Murder," One of the 19th Century's most Notorious International Crimes "Hawkshaw" (Fraser, John Arthur). The Swamp of Death; Or, The Benwell Murder. Chicago: The Eagle Publishing Company, 1890. 190 pp. Woodcut…text illustrations. Octavo (7-1/4" x 5"; 18.4 x 12.7 cm). Original pictorial printed wrappers. Light spotting and soiling to wrappers; front wrapper partially detached but secure. Interior lightly toned. Small early owner stamp ("G.W. Stockman, M.D.") to head of front wrapper. A very good copy of an exceptionally rare title. $650. * In February 1890, the body of Frederick Cornwallis Benwell was found executed in Ontario's Blenheim Swamp. The culprit was John Reginald Birchall, an Oxford-educated grifter who ran a "Farm Pupil" scam, luring wealthy young Englishmen to Canada with promises of agricultural partnerships only to murder them for their capital. The ensuing investigation was led by John Wilson Murray, Canada's first government detective (and the real-life inspiration for The Murdoch Mysteries). Murray's use of post-mortem photography-published in newspapers to identify the victim-marked a landmark moment in forensic history. The trial in Woodstock, Ontario, became a global media sensation, culminating in Birchall's execution in November 1890. This edition is unrecorded in OCLC. While a single copy of this title is listed under the M.A. Donohue & Co. imprint, this Eagle Publishing Company edition is entirely unlocated in institutional holdings. A rare survival of "true crime" ephemera produced at the height of the public's obsession with the case, offering a fictionalized but immediate perspective on a foundational Canadian forensic mystery. Chicago: The Eagle Publishing Company, 1890. (illustrator).

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author "To Master Richard Milne-Redhead", a botanist and Fellow of the Linnean Society. Hawkshaw's narrative ranges from Atlantic crossings and hazardous coastal voyages to journeys into the Venezuelan interior, describing tropical forests, earthquakes, and encounters with wildl…ife, while also reflecting on local society and politics. A leading figure in engineering, Hawkshaw (1811-1891) oversaw the construction of the Severn Tunnel, designed London's Cannon Street and Charing Cross stations, and advised on the Suez Canal. He travelled to Venezuela in 1832, when, at the age of 21, he took charge of the Bolívar Mining Association's operations at Aroa. He sailed via Barbados to La Guaira and managed a large workforce at the mines, improving transport routes and developing access to the coast. During his residence he undertook wider journeys and recorded observations on the country's geology and environment, which formed the basis of the present work. He returned to England after his health deteriorated and went on to a distinguished engineering career. The recipient, Richard Milne-Redhead (1828-1900), was a boy at the time he received the present copy and later became a widely travelled plant collector and established a noted garden at Holden Clough. Small octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blind-stamped frames to covers, yellow endpapers, untrimmed edges. Newspaper clippings pasted to rear endpapers relating to the author's knighthood. Spine and a couple of corners bumped, superficial splits to head and foot of joints but firm, foxing to outer leaves. A very good copy.
