Please see the condition note after this for details, if this is missing please consider Acceptable to mean poor quality that could include major staining, water damage, writing, missing dustjacket, etc etc. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). Fisher was chiefly recognised as an innovator, strategist, and architect of naval reform rather than as an operational admiral, although he held combat commands throughout his career. Appointed First Sea Lord in 1904, Fisher played a critical role in the Anglo-German naval arms race, helping to modernise the British navy ahead of the First World War.As First Sea Lord he drove the construction of HMS Dreadnought, the first all-big-gun battleship, but he also believed that submarines would become increasingly important and urged their development. He became involved with the introduction of turbine engines to replace reciprocating engines, and with the introduction of oil fuelling to replace coal. He introduced daily baked bread on board ships, whereas when he entered the service it was customary to eat hard biscuits, frequently infested by biscuit beetles. became First Sea Lord again in November 1914. He resigned seven months later in frustration over Winston Churchill's Gallipoli campaign, and then served as chairman of the Government's Board of Invention and Research until the end of the war. He took the punning motto "Fear God and dread nought" on his coat of arms as a reference to Dreadnought. In 1917 he accepted the Japanese Order of the Rising Sun with Paulownia Flowers, Grand Cordon, the highest of eight classes associated with the award, with the King's permission. ; VG/FINE. Book.

In den WarenkorbWith the surge of interest in the slave trade attention has lately been directed at Simond and Hankey, a 'past constituent' of the NatWest Bank. These two items are nice artefacts of the firm. Both are in good condition, lightly aged, and laid out in the same way, with the bill written out on one side of a 22.5 x 9 cm slip of laid paper. One is for 'Deux Cent Livres Sterling a trente quatre Sols neuf deniers de gros' and the other for 'Cent Soixante Sterling a Trente quatre Sols dix deniers de gros'. Both drawn on 'Messrs. Vernede & Co'. Each signed 'Pre: Simond' and both endorsed by 'Jean Hankey', with instructions in French for the bill of £160 to be paid to the account of 'Messieurs Gme. Van Brienen & fils' and that of £200 to 'Messieurs Geo. Clifford & fils'.

In den Warenkorb2pp., 4to. Bifolium. Addressed on reverse of second leaf 'To | John Hankey Esqr'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. An unusually forthright document in the staid world of Georgian banking, the letter begins: 'Sir | We have received the favor of your Letter dated yesterday with much surprize, not only as it informs us of a praemium being offer'd with an acceptance of your house, but also as it seems to intimate that it has been done with our concurrence - we can assure you, Sir, that your Letter is the only information we have had upon this subject - the bill, it is true, is in our hands, and we have Lord St John's directions to deliver it to a person who is to pay a Sum of money into his account but we are perfectly ignorant from what that money is to arise'. Further instructions from Lord St John are required, 'before the person calls for the bill'. From the Hankey & Co. banking archive.
