A damp stain at the top left that runs throughout the magazine and results in loss at the spine on pages 77 - 92. There is a small loss of text on pages 88 - 92. More pronounced soiling to the rear cover w/a 2.5' x 1.25" chip out of the top left. Similar slightly smaller chip on the last page (91/92) that results in text loss to the top two lines of the left column. Similar yet smaller loss to page 89/90 but no text is affected. Smith collector, I wonder if there ever were a novel titled "State of Torment". The back cover teaser suggests a sadomasochistic plot - but between the covers we find John [AKA Charles Nue…tzel] Davidson's very scarce novel "Appointment with Terror" (Pike Books # 204). Regarding the Davidson: "Just out of prison, he was definitely looking for some action at the party. He stopped before Rena. Then his hand jerked out and wrapped around her neck. He yanked her face to his, powerfully forcing her lips against his mouth." 160 pages. CONDITION: a bright, tight, square, unmarked, uncreased, apparently unread copy with minimal shelf-wear (a touch of rubbing on the back cover, compromised only by a bumped spine top and a few pages cut without a right margin. This attractive, collectible copy is now in a clear, protective polypropylene bag. NOTE: A higher resolution cover scan will gladly be supplied on request. This small item will be shipped with a complimentary upgrade to trackable First Class on domestic (US) orders.

Bates was a great lover of the countryside and this was exemplified in two volumes of essays entitled Through the Woods and Down the River. During Worl…d War II he was commissioned into the RAF solely to write short stories. The Air Ministry realized that the populace was less concerned with facts and figures about the war than it was with reading about those who were fighting it. The stories were originally published in the News Chronicle under the pseudonym of Flying Officer X. Later they were published in book form as The Greatest People in the World and Other Stories and How Sleep the Brave and Other Stories. Following a posting to the Far East, this was followed by two novels about Burma, The Purple Plain in 1947 and The Jacaranda Tree, and one set in India, The Scarlet Sword." From Wikipedia: "The Purple Plain is a 1954 British war film, directed by Robert Parrish, with Gregory Peck playing a Canadian pilot serving in the Royal Air Force in Burma in the closing months of the World War II, who is battling with depression after having lost his wife. It was nominated for two BAFTA awards. Bill Forrester (Gregory Peck), a Canadian pilot serving in the Royal Air Force in Burma, flying de Havilland Mosquito, a two-seat fighter-bomber. Forrester is emotionally distraught after losing his new wife in the Blitz in London and has become self destructive, seeking to end his life in action.
