A very scarce work in the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. 32 plates, including the frontispiece, and numerous illustrations by various illustrators. Collated complete. Ink inscription to the front paste down, dated 1924. Ink inscription to the front free end paper, dated 1877. Daily Mail photograph of Queen Elizabeth II, dated 1943, pasted to the reverse of the front free end paper. Various articles concerning fairy tales, dated 1928, pasted to the rear free end paper. Loosely inserted is the bookplate of a previous owner. A collection of popular fairy tales, such as Cinderella, the Sleeping Beauty, the Three Bears, and Jack and the Bean-stalk, with some stories based on nursery rhymes. A page of publisher's advertisements to the rear. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Externally smart, with some bumping to the extremities and the spine, particularly to the head and tail of the spine. The spine is also slightly sunned, but the boards are still bright. Internally, the binding is strained between pages 439 and 449, but otherwise firm. Pages are generally clean, with the odd spot and handling mark. A couple of the illustrations have been coloured in by a previous owner. Good. book.

One monthly issue (May 1865, pp. 209-12) has been neatly cut along the gutter (present and laid in its proper place), the September 1865 issue has some staining and a small vignette illustration partially cut round (still present), else very good overall with a few small early tape repairs. The *Band of Hope Review* was a lavishly illustrated "improving" magazine for the children of the poor and working classes, founded and edited by the Methodist social reformer Thomas Bywater Smithies. A scarce volume of 72 complete issues dating from the magazine's golden period, featuring contemporary articles on slavery and several issues with outstanding front-page wood engravings by John Gilbert and Harrison Weir.

Lacking the August 1862 issue (pp. 365-68) and first leaf of the June 1863 issue (pp. 405-06), else very good with a few small early tape repairs. The *British Workman* was a lavishly illustrated four-page penny monthly dedicated to the industrial working classes. Its founder and editor, Thomas Bywater Smithies, believed that pictures were the best way to promote Christian morals, temperance, and the world wide abolition of slavery. The magazine was supported by the great politician and social reformer, Lord Shaftsbury, and Florence Nightingale distributed it to troops during the Crimean War. A scarce volume of 72 issues dating from the magazine's golden period, featuring several issues with outstanding front-page wood engravings by John Gilbert, and including one by Harrison Weir.
