Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Eikon Basilike, with frontispiece, 1649, comprising three parts: the Eikon Basilike; His Majesties praiers delivered to Doctor Juxon; and the Apophthegmata Aurea, Regia, Carolina. A total of 300 pages. Printed by W. D. (William Dugard), with the fold-out frontispiece of Charles I, kneeling. The book has been rebound in full leather, with three raised bands on the spine. The exterior is in poor condition: the rear cover board is missing, the front board present but detached. The gilt lettering on the spine is still legible. The interior is in good condition. The first few pages are starting to pull from the textblock. Otherwise the binding is still quite strong. Slight soiling and faint staining to the page edges. Some page corners are creased, some are starting to curl. Moderate foxing, occasional stains throughout. A few pages have some water-staining. Text is generally clean & unmarked. One page has a small ink scribble in the margins. On the reverse of the frontispiece is handwritten commentary on the symbolism of the engraving, seemingly contemporary. Part of the commentary has been cut off by the trimming of the frontispiece. Please see the photos for further details on the edition and the condition.Very good condition, plays perfectly. hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Eikon Basilike. The Pourtraicture of His Sacred Majestie in His Solitudes and Sufferings, King Charles I â" Early Issue (Madan 125) Publication: [London], [Secretly Printed], 1649 Formatting: 8vo, complete pagination unverified from plates. Condition Report:Very Good. The later half-leather binding over marbled boards is tight and structurally sound, though it exhibits moderate rubbing and wear to the extremities, particularly at the spine ends and leather corners. The spine retains a degree of its original luster with visible, albeit slightly dulled, gilt bands and titling. Internally, the text block remains well-preserved for its age, featuring typical age-toning and occasional scattered foxing. The crucial William Marshall folding emblematic frontispiece is present and remains largely crisp, with only minor creasing and very faint edge-wear, free of major tears. The title page is intact with a small early ink signature at the upper margin, alongside an isolated dark stain at the extreme upper-left gutter that does not encroach upon the text. The armorial bookplate is securely affixed to the front pastedown, and the hinges remain strong without cracking. Catalogue Note:ÂA notable early printing of the famed Royalist text, specifically identified in bibliographies as Madan 125. Released in the immediate wake of the King's execution, the book functioned as a powerful piece of propaganda, transforming the fallen monarch into a Christian martyr. This copy is distinguished by the inclusion of the celebrated folding frontispiece engraved by William Marshall. The emblematic illustration, depicting the King kneeling, casting aside his earthly crown in favour of a heavenly one, became one of the most enduring and widely reproduced political images of the seventeenth century. The volume features appealing provenance, bearing the armorial bookplate of Thomas Weld-Blundell of Ince Blundell, a member of an established English Catholic family, alongside a modest early ink signature to the title page. While the text was an immediate bestseller, surviving early issues complete with the Marshall plate and in secure bindings remain highly desirable on the open antiquarian market. An undated vintage newspaper clipping regarding Richard Brandon, the purported executioner of Charles I, is also loosely inserted. Published mere days after his execution, theÂEikon Basilike (The Royal Portrait) purports to be the spiritual autobiography of King Charles I. Often attributed to the ghostwriting of Bishop John Gauden, this masterstroke of Royalist propaganda portrays the doomed monarch not as a defeated tyrant, but as a pious martyr enduring his suffering with Christ-like grace. Featuring William Marshallâs iconic emblematic frontispiece, this book became an underground sensation that defined the memory of the Stuart king and profoundly shaped the cultural landscape of the English Civil War era. Zustand: Very Good+. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fine. FULL PAGINATION: (8), 236,12, (2), 52, (2), (4), 58, (2), (2), 46, (2), (2), 20pp. Original full dark brown calf blindstamped panelled binding, outer panel decorated in blind at the corners with small tools. Raised bands and remains of blind and gilt decor to spine. Rebacked in near-matching dark brown calf with remains of original backstrip laid down. Wear to boards and board corners. All edges gilt. 8vo (11.4 x 17.5cm). Hinges sound. Original endpapers restored at gutters. This is the 1st edn (Madan 22; Almack 45; ESTC R224767) belonging to the 2nd group of edns identified by Madan (though see also Lynch, 2007, 'Religious Identity, Stationers' Company Politics, and Three Printers of "Eikon Basilike"', Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America, 101.3, 289). This 2nd group of edns derives from a separate source than that used by the first edns pub. by Royston: a MS apparently given by the king to Edward Simmons. They were set up from this MS by William Dugard for the publisher Francis Eglesfield, and were the first edns to include supplementary materials, including prayers used by the king and an account by Princess Elizabeth of the king's final words to her. Issued together under a separate t.p. was the Apophthegmata. Also inc. for the first time was the 'Explanation' of William Marshall's emblematic frontis. Most of the additions were incorporated into later Eikon edns, making Dugard responsible for its 'most widely adapted and enduring reshapings and amplifications'. He was also 'the only printer of the dozens of interregnum editions bold enough to identify himself on the title-page' - indeed, he was arrested immediately after the publication of this 'sensational edition' (Lynch, 307, 299). Eikon is collated complete, with the 3 illus. called for in Madan: the folding frontis (Hind plate D; Madan frontis 3, 'the finest of Marshall's own designs' & the 4th of 7 versions), a frontis. port of King Charles (Madan 36: 'etched by (Wenceslaus) Hollar in 1641'), and a port. of Prince Charles (facing R3). Marshall frontis. has closed tear (c. 6.5cm), slightly affecting image; both it and Hollar frontis. were 'designed for this edn' (Madan). Pencil inscr. dated 1811 to front free endpaper; near-identical inscr. in pencil and pen to blank r. of folded frontis. Blank inside fold of the frontis has pen inscr. in old hand: 'The genuineness of his eikon has been contested tho' on what authority I cannot say -': presumably referring to the controversy over authorship. In the same hand on the following blank endpage are notes on Charles, from 'His Conduct in the beginning of his reign was tyrannical' to 'He was a man of polite taste'. Pencil inscr. to t.p.; pen initials to rear of t.p. Loss to centre t.p. (c. 1.5cm), where material (wax seal?), was removed from verso. BOUND WITH: 1) The papers which passed at New-Castle. Complete: (4), 58, (2)pp. Last leaf blank. Frontis as called for: port. of King with globe signed 'Guil: Marshall sculp:'. Madan records as most often found with Royston's edn 3, variant b, of the Eikon. Madan 98; ESTC R213547. 2) Monumentum Regale. Imprint: 'Printed in the Year 1649'. Complete: (2),46, (2)pp. Last leaf blank. T.p. & pp. 2-3 in red & black. Anon.; ESTC ascr. to John Cleveland, though Madan queries. Madan: 'printed by Grismon, no doubt for Royston'; sometimes sold with the Eikon. Madan 106; ESTC R208853. 3) Loyalties tears. By J.B. Imprint: 'Anno Dom. 1649'. Incomplete: (2), 10pp. (ESTC has (4), 11, (9)pp.). Ascr. to John Birkenhead. ESTC R209196. This likely contemporary assembly brings together Dugard's first printing of the Eikon with further commemorative material most often found associated with Royston edns, further enlarging the Dugard edn, which itself 'marked a turn to the sacramental - or perhaps more fully realized the phenomenon of memorialization that was Eikon Basilike' (Lynch 307). This edn of the Eikon is very rare: 'it is probable that the bulk of it was seized at the press, at the time of Dugard's arrest' (Madan). Robust packaging. Overseas orders trackable on request. Size: c. 350pp.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Small 8vo 165 mms by 110 . pp [10} 269 Double page folding engraving of Charles I as frontispiece. Royalist publication purporting to be the memoirs of the recently executed King. Parliament commissioned an answer to it with John Milton's Eikonoklastes. Milton was the first to cast doubt on its authorship, and Madan's New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike demonstrated that while Dr. John Gauden was the author, he worked closely from Charles' manuscripts. Recently rebound in half dark brown leather lettered gilt at the spine with raised bands and marbled boards. Very good indeed with clean text. Neat note on the front blank by one Eliz. Caires ('her book') in about 1790 noting that the Gentleman's Magazine of September 1785 (p 695) 'now say wote by .Bishop Gauden.' Bound in full light brown unlettered with 7 light rulings at spine. Title page very slighty soiled, a few leaves carelessly opened not affecting text , some text faintly browned; pleasing VG copy.…

Hardcover. First Edition. Folio, [11], 458 pages, [10], pp. 3- 733, [5]. In Very Good minus condition. Re-backed, and bound in full contemporary calf, tooled spine with gilt lettering. Boards have moderate plus wear to front and back covers, moderate wear to corners and bottom edge, and light shelf wear to leather on spine (especially head of spine). Text block has moderate plus age-toning to edges, and light plus age-toning to front free end paper and frontispiece engravings. The bookplate of Ernest Benzon appears on the front pastedown, and signature of a former owner reading "Derby" appears on the address leaf. Title pages are red-ruled. Includes two double-page plates, an engraved title-page, and another full page engraving. Text complete per ESTC entry. RW Consignment. The gathers together a collection of letters, treatises and historical accounts published during the English Civil War, with the purported spiritual autobiography of Charles I, the Eikon Basilike. The autobiography first appeared within days of the King's execution in January, 1649. The present title is a first edition of the collected works, published with royal approval after the Restoration. The presentation of Charles I as martyr was a common trope in monarchist writings during the years of the Commonwealth and after the Restoration, and was employed similarly in Robert Brown's Subjects Sorrow published in 1649. Falconer Madan, in his 1950 A New Bibliography of the Eikon Basilike of King Charles the First suggests that many of the writings included in this work were actually authored by John Gauden, who also included some authentic writings of the martyred monarch. Gauden (d. 1662) was a royalist cleric who served as Bishop of Exeter and, later, Worcester. References: Wing C2075; ESTC R9377. 1353030. Special Collections - Downstairs.…

Morocco. Zustand: Fine. Later seventeenth-century edition of this purported spiritual autobiography attributed to King Charles I of England. Crown 8vo (181 x 101mm): [16],256pp, with frontispiece engraved by William Marshall (Madan 47) and full-page portrait of Charles II facing Chapter XXVII. Beautifully bound to period style by Fitterer in black morocco, spine in six compartments divided by raised bands ruled in blind, covers paneled in gilt with curlicue corner devices, burgundy red leather lettering piece gilt, end papers renewed. An exceptional copy, tightly bound and clean throughout with crisp impressions of the plates. Madan 66. Almack 62. ESTC R204383. Wing E311A. Originally attributed to Charles I, but, according to Madan, composed by John Gauden, Bishop of Worcester, who probably included some authentic writings of the King and may even have collaborated with him. The first edition was in print on the day of Charles I's execution, on 30 January 1649, followed by many editions, with various erroneous dates and publishing details. The Eikon reviews the course of the civil wars from the calling of the Long Parliament in 1640 to Charles's imprisonment at Carisbrooke Castle in 1647, and defends the King's policies. It is part political memoir and part spiritual autobiography, presenting Charles as the defender of both Church and State. Written in a moving, straightforward style in diary form, the Eikon combines irenic prayers urging forgiveness of Charles's executioners with a justification of royalism. The poem "Majesty in Misery," said to have been written by the King at Carisbrooke, first appeared in the 1676 edition of Perinchief's Life of King Charles, but this is the first edition of the Eikon in which it was printed. [London: William Dugard.] "1648" [i.e. 1649]. 8vo. Contemporary black morocco, rebacked with original spine, covers with double fillet border, central floral lozenge and cornerpieces, flat spine gilt ruled in compartments with later gilt lettering, gilt edges, endpapers renewed; pp. [6], 208, 107-154, 255-302, [8], with double-page engraved frontispiece after William Marshall, woodcut initial and typographic headpieces; spine a little discoloured, extremities very lightly rubbed; the occasional spot, but generally a very good, crisp copy; presentation inscription "Louisa Davis given by her affectionate mother Selina Jawin January 1815" to front free endpaper; earlier signatures of John Hox and John Symes to rear endpaper, ticket of Salisbury Bookbinders to rear pastedown.Early edition of the Eikon Basilike, Charles I's spiritual biography and a bestseller of Royalist propaganda, handsomely preserved in a fine contemporary binding.First published on 9 February 1649, only ten days after Charles I's execution, the Eikon Basilike (Eikon Basilike, lit. "Royal portrait") rapidly became one of the most widely read and influential books ever printed in English. Written in a plain yet poignant diaristic style, it blends irenic prayers seeking forgiveness of the king's executioners with a defence of royalism and of Charles's political and military conduct. Although long attributed to Charles himself, authorship is now generally credited to John Gauden (1605-1662), Bishop of Worcester, who may have incorporated genuine writings of the king.Despite Parliamentary efforts to suppress it, the book was a runaway success: thirty-six editions in 1649 alone, including the present one. Central to its impact was William Marshall's famous allegorical frontispiece, here in a version re-designed specifically for this edition. Depicting Charles as a Christian martyr, the image helped foster the cult of the king as Martyr Rex: Charles holds a crown of thorns symbolising Christ's Passion and heavenly glory, while his discarded royal crown lies at his feet. In response to the book's immense success, Parliament commissioned a scathing rebuttal by John Milton, the Eikonoklastes ("Icon-breaker"), published later that same year. This edition is notable for omitting reference to the "Prayers" on its title page or in the contents, suggesting that they were added in haste. Bound at the end is "A true relation of the Kings speech to the Lady Elizabeth, and the Duke of Gloucester, the day before his death" and "An Epitaph upon King Charles".Madan 21; ESTC R29848. …

Front flyleaf and title page with ink owner inscription of Robert Bridge; title page with faded ink signature of Joseph MacIntyre. Almack 15; Madan 21; Wing E-283; ESTC R29848. Covers with trivial soiling, frontispiece faintly browned (and with two tiny chips and a short wormtrail), title leaf backed and slightly soiled, first half of the book with faint, narrow vertical dampstain to fore margin, last three pages lightly soiled and with a few small ink trials, but still a very good copy of a book normally found in poor shape, the text quite fresh, and the later binding with only insignificant signs of use. Nicely bound and opening with a fine and touching engraving, this is an early printing of a work purporting to be the meditations of Charles I, recorded during the Great Rebellion and originally published shortly before his execution, with copies actually being offered for sale on the day of his demise. Afterwards, the strong popular appeal of the book prompted repeated printings, produced, as Almack notes, "amidst dangers and difficulties." Despite those fraught conditions at the press, Almack observes that "the engraved plate [in our volume] is in a fine early impression." And he mentions that the final Prayers of the Sovereign near the end of our volume--which are not listed in the table of contents and are not present in all copies--were specially printed for this edition. The work's musings on Parliament, religion, battle, family, and death present the portrait of a troubled, conscientious, and virtuous king. Royalists maintained that they saw the manuscript in the hands of the monarch, but soon after publication, a rumor began to circulate that it was the work of the ecclesiastic John Gauden (the book concludes with an epitaph for Charles I signed by "I. H."). Perhaps Gauden (1605-62) came into possession of a manuscript penned by the king, but similarities of the text here to Gauden's other writings suggest that he injected much of his own belief into the present text. Whoever the author, the book was most effective in establishing the murdered king as a martyr. Dismayed, Parliament recruited Milton to present a point-by-point answer, issued in his scathing 1649 "Eikonoklastes"--a work that got the author arrested when the monarchy was restored in 1660. Dean of Essex during the English Civil War, Gauden was initially sympathetic to republican demands, but he became more and more doubtful of the merits of the rebellion as it progressed. The execution of the anointed king was the breaking point for him, and he denounced Cromwell as a murderer. After Charles II was again installed on the throne, Gauden was given the bishopric of Worcester as a reward for his support of the restored order.…
