Scotsman John Galt, 1779-1839, was a novelist, political commentator, entrepreneur. Some of his adventures included hanging out with Lord Byron in Gibraltar, Malta and Greece. Later he published the first full bio of Byron, was appointed as secretary to the Canada Company in 1824 and later its superintendent 1826-1829. In Upper Canada (Ontario) he founded Guelph, co-founded Goderich and Galt was named after him. His son Alexander was one of the Canadian fathers of Confederation and its first minister of finance.
