Two pages, 4to. Very good, though on rather discoloured paper, and with strip of previous mount adhering to right-hand edge of verso. Johnston desires the settlement of the 'account of Incidental Expenses incurr'd during the period of [Johnston's deceased brother, A. Johnston's] command' in St Domingo. Although the account was signed by 'General Maitland' (Frederick Maitland, 1763-1848, quartermaster-general in the West Indies for six years from 1800), and was transmitted to Whyte the previous summer, 'together with a warrant for your own pay', Johnston has been unwilling to trouble Whyte on the subject, 'in ye expectation' of Whyte coming to town. However he now wants to 'deliver up [his] vouchers and settle my brother's accounts'. If Whyte comes to town Johnston will 'take that opportunity of waiting upon you with such voucher for the different charges as are among the Deputy Pay masters papers and with any explanation it may be in my power to gain. but if you are too well satisfied with the comforts of your retreat as to have no idea of exchanging them for the bustle and confusion of this place, I will make a point of attending you at Halburton House at any time that may best suit your convenience. Mr. G desires me to offer his compliments'.
