A beautifully designed, hardback book, with the front board decorated with colourful flags all from different countries of the empire and black block type title slap bang in the middle of the board. The spine also has the book title and an image of the union jack proudly displayed above a style of wreath complete with a nice matching ribbon. This book is in nice condition, normal wear, marks and tear apply consistent with use and age. Front board very slightly loose from binding, otherwise the binding is nice and solid. 406 pages, all intact and all hand cut pages, text and fabulous illustrations are in really good, clean, readable order. Sixteen drawings in colour by the prolific W. Rainey. No published date in the book, but would estimate to be late 19th century and probably a First Edition. All pages are gilt edge to top of papers. Please note this is a heavy book therefore postage/shipping overseas may increase from listed price depending on final destination. An amazing collection of poetry by some truly great poets, from Blake to Longfellow, from Shakespeare to Sir Walter Scott and so on.

Erstausgabe
Hardcover. Zustand: Fine. First Edition. Octavo; [4], 247 pages, publisher's embossed black cloth, newly rebacked in leather An excellent precis of the history of the treatment of the Indian tribes east of the Mississippi River. The 2 fine maps are the frontispiece (16x11 cm.), of the territories several Indian nations occupied previously to the settlement of the English colonies in America. The large folding map (46x43 cm), also in color, shows the territory NOW occupied by the natives, In addition to the areas east of the Mississippi River, this volume republished the report of two Quakers, John Lang & Samuel Taylor, who traveled, in 1842, west of the Mississippi, visiting the Winnebago, Shawnees, Kickapoos, Delawares, Kansas, Osages, Cherokees and Choctaws. [ Sabin 86572; Phillips, Maps of America, p.604; see also Howes L72; not in Field; Graff 2386, 2387; Hubach p. 95; Jones 1073; Rader 2199; Wagner-Camp-Becker 96; Streeter 1807; Eberstadt 137:332; Not in Siebert Catalogues ]. The map of North America depicts an independent Texas extending north nearly to the Oregon border, and northwest to Russian America.

8vo, pp. 34; original brown printed wrappers; aside from a few minor nick at the wrapper edges, this is a fine copy. Two editions were published in 1843, one in Providence and the other in New York. "Internal differences led Graff to believe that the New York edition was the earlier one . "Lang and Taylor were members of the Society of Friends who visited the Indians recently removed from east of the Mississippi to the trans-Mississippi regions. Their report was presented to the Yearly Meeting of the Friends of New England and New York before being published under the above title . They visited the Winnebagoes, Shawnees, Kickapoos, Delawares, Kansas, Osages, Cherokees, and Choctaws, between August and December, 1842" (Wagner-Camp).
