Captures many Cathedrals, Churches and Abbeys before the Victorian restorers and, (in the case of the ruins) The Ministry of Works became involved. One of the most interesting snapshots of the state of the nation's ecclesiastical architecture I have seen, inbetween John Britton at the start of the nineteenth century and The Builder's Survey of English and Welsh Cathedrals at the end of the century (and which I also have for sale on ABE). It is particularly pleasing to see some "lesser" places illustrated as well as some which have since, I suspect, disappeared. Two elephant folio volumes, leather to corners and to spine, where it has five bands. Corners and edges are heavily rubbed. Front and back covers are marbled boards. Volume One, frontispiece, title page, table of contents then 99 full page plans and engravings followed by 27 further plates showing seals of Cathedrals and Abbeys. Volume Two, frontispiece, title page, contents, then 97 full page engravings and plans, plus 16 engravings of monks showing different Orders, and two plates of monastic coats of arms. The title pages are heavily spotted. There is some spotting and grubbiness around the edges of the plates, but, miraculously, this rarely encroaches onto the plans and illustrations. With the bookplate of the late John Warren, architect. Postage will be extra - charged at cost - if sent outside the UK.
