"Knowledge of John Chalkhill (c. 1595-1642) as poet depended for nearly three hundred years on Izaak Walton, who included two fishing songs by 'Jo. Chalkhill' in The Compleat Angler . . . When Mr. [Arthur A.] Houghton sold a considerable part of his library (Christie's, London, 1979-1980), some of his manuscripts and books were bought by the Pierpont Morgan Library, where I had been Director since 1969. One of the acquisitions we were especially proud of was this group of Chalkhill manuscripts . . . which are all of those known by the poet. These were purchased on 13 June 1979 as a gift of the Fellows of the Library, marking the occasion of my tenth anniversary as Director" (Charles Ryskamp).

First edition, one of a small number specially bound for members of the Roxburghe Club (names of 42 members are printed on a preliminary leaf). 4to. xiv, 220 pp. Illustrated from facsimile manuscript pages. Chalkhill (ca. 1595-1642) was a seventeenth-century British poet who is known by two angling songs that Izaak Walton included in his 1653 "Compleat Angler," a 3000-line "pastoral history" published as "Thealma and Clearchus" in 1683 (with a preface by Walton), and by a group of shorter poems that are archived "among the Gell family papers at Hopton Hall in Derbyshire" (preface), published here as a group for the first time. Fine copy, designed by Ronald Gordon at the Oliphant Press, New York. A trade edition was also issued in 1999, by the Princeton U. Press.
