Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Thealma and Clearchus: A Pastoral Romance is a novel written by John Chalkhill and published in 1820. The book is a pastoral romance, a genre that was popular in the 16th and 17th centuries and typically features idealized rural settings and characters. The story follows the two titular characters, Thealma and Clearchus, as they fall in love and navigate the challenges of their relationship. Thealma is a shepherdess who lives in a pastoral idyll, while Clearchus is a young man from the city who comes to the countryside seeking adventure. The two meet and quickly fall in love, but their happiness is threatened by various obstacles, including jealous rivals and societal expectations. The novel is written in a lyrical, poetic style, with descriptions of nature and rural life that create a dreamy, romantic atmosphere. The characters are often depicted as idealized archetypes, embodying virtues such as purity, loyalty, and courage. Overall, Thealma and Clearchus is a charming and romantic novel that offers a window into the pastoral literature of the past. It is a classic example of the genre, and a must-read for anyone interested in the history of English literature. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.

Stephen Keynes's copy, his name printed in red in the roll of members. "Knowledge of John Chalkhill (c. 1595-1642) as poet depended for nearly three hundred years on Izaak Walton, who included two fishing songs by 'Jo. Chalkhill' in The Compleat Angler . . . When Mr. [Arthur A.] Houghton sold a considerable part of his library (Christie's, London, 1979-1980), some of his manuscripts and books were bought by the Pierpont Morgan Library, where I had been Director since 1969. One of the acquisitions we were especially proud of was this group of Chalkhill manuscripts . . . which are all of those known by the poet. These were purchased on 13 June 1979 as a gift of the Fellows of the Library, marking the occasion of my tenth anniversary as Director" (Charles Ryskamp).
