London, Printed: New York: Reprinted and Published by I. Riley, 1816. vii, 163 [i.e. 139], [5] pp. Octavo (8-1/2" x 5-1/4"; 21.6 x 13.3 cm). Contemporary three-quarter calf over plain-paper boards, blind fillets and lettering piece to spine. Moderate rubbing and a few inkspots and faint dampstains to boards, large signature, "Jno C Coit" to front board, which is beginning to separate but secure, heavier rubbing to extremities with wear to spine and corners. Moderate toning and light foxing to interior, lower outside corners lacking from front and rear free endpapers, small "Jno C. Coit" to head of title page. A good copy. $500. * Only American edition, based on the only London edition (1815), to which it is star-paged. Its chapters are entitled, "Who Are Considered to be Carriers Under That Term," "Conveyance of Persons," "Conveyance of Goods; And First, Of the Extent of Liability at Common Law," "Liability--How Restrained by the Act of Parties, Or Otherwise," "What Acts Shall be a Discharge of this Liability," Miscellaneous Duties Connected with this Contract," "In Case of Suit," "Of the Duties and Privileges of Inn-Keepers" and "Appendix: Regulations as so Porterage in London by Statute Cases." Born into a distinguished New London, Connecticut family, John Calkins Coit [1799-1863] graduated Yale in 1818 and, after three years as a teacher at "female academies" in New London and Windham, moved to Cheraw, South Carolina in 1821, where he established a legal practice and became the head of a local bank and a plantation owner. He abandoned law and business a few years later and became a Presbyterian minister in Cheraw, a post he held for 19 years. Poor health then forced him into retirement.
