Complete with 8 tinted lithographic plates (including frontispiece), a large folding route map of Now-Gong, and a folding lithographed plan of the Hill Fort of Konomah. Crucially, this copy features the contemporary ink ownership signature to the title page of "H. Hobbs" (possibly Harry Hobbs. Hobbs was imperial Calcutta's most famous and beloved eccentric chronicler, author, and piano tuner, who spent decades travelling the frontier Presidencies and authored definitive accounts of early Anglo-Indian social history.) An exceptional association copy pairing a key text on Assam with one of the region's most prominent historical raconteurs. Bound in a later professional half black leather over blue cloth boards. Spine features four raised bands, ruled in gilt, with bright gilt titles. Very Good minus condition. The binding shows a little light rubbing to the sides of the spine and the leather tips, but remains solid, square, and structurally sound. Internally, the pages and all 8 plates are in lovely, exceptionally clean and bright condition, presenting far better than typically encountered for this title though showing some honest signs of its historic travels. An intrepid vintage worm track has tunneled through the lower margin of the text block from front to back; because this intersects with the front folding map while closed, it has resulted in a few clean wormhole punctures running across the central crease of the opened map. The map remains fully intact and entirely legible, but does bear these historic tracks. A highly scarce and structurally complete first edition copy of Major Butler's foundational 19th-century travelogue and ethnographic study. Serving as a chronological sequel to his 1847 work, A Sketch of Assam, this volume details his administrative duties and travels as Principal Assistant to the Governor-General on the North-East Frontier. The text provides valuable, early firsthand accounts of the customs, conflicts, and daily lives of the indigenous hill communities, including the Angami Nagas, Kukis, Mikirs, and Rengma Nagas. Additionally, it remains highly sought after by sports historians for its vivid narratives of big-game hunting from elephant-back, detailing encounters with tigers, wild buffaloes, and rhinoceroses.
