Zustand: very good. Den Haag: Martinus Nijhoff, 1975. Paperback. viii,168 pp. Index. (International Archives of the History of Ideas, series minor 17). - From the publisher : Virginitas: An Essay in the History of a Medieval Ideal explores the changing significance of the age-old designation of virginity as the standard of spiritual perfection, an ideal that early in the Christian era came to be associated with the life of the hermit, the monk, and the nun. Professor Bugge's conclusions are relevant to more than the study of monasticism, however, for they cast new light on a more radical concern, the equivocal function which medieval theology accorded sexuality in the life of Christian man. Analysis begins with Genesis, and with a group of exegetes whose understanding of the mystery of sexuality proceeds from a dualistic world view with certain surprising affinities to that of heterodox gnosticism. Their equation of virginity with the existential status man had enjoyed before the Fall influenced later monastic commentators. It also helped to establish as central the position which virginity is seen to occupy in monastic ideology. Judged against a backdrop of patristic speculation over original innocence, the ideal of virginity appears to give life and logic to all the other beliefs and practices of the medieval cloister. The author then directs attention to monastic literature, showing how a knowledge of the structural importance of virginity can be a key to a fuller appreciation of such works. Certain Old English hagiographical poems reveal the connection be- tween virginity and moral perfection to best advantage. Then a number of Middle English prose pieces composed for female religious around the turn of the twelfth century, particularly the Ancrene Riwle and the works of the 'Katherine Group', allow a review of the decisively prominent theme of the 'bride of Christ'. They provide a showcase in which to observe a momentous transition in the attitude o the medieval Church toward sexuality. In it the ideal of virginity underwent thoroughgoing 'feminization,' a shift in emphasis sharp enough to alter the tone o later medieval spirituality, as well as to undermine the more traditional belief concerning virginal perfection. This latter development, the author suggests, had notable effect upon the gradual decline of monastic culture in the later Middle Ages. Condition : very good copy. ISBN 9789024716951.
