Sm. 4to., original red morocco backed, red buckram by Sangorski and Sutcliffe with design of a satyr and a maiden blocked in gilt on the upper cover, top edge gilt, others uncut, spine rather faded otherwise good. Jurgen is one of the world's greatest satires but also a great romance, Sir Hugh Walpole rated it very highly : "no book in the English language.colours one's imagination and fancy quite as this one does. The world of Jurgen with its grotesquerie, its sudden beauty, its poverty and its pity, its adventure and romance, is a world descended from earlier worlds but unique of its own period." Christopher Sandford of the Golden Cockerel Press particularly relished Buckland-Wright's wood-engravings for this book due to their unusually dark atmosphere. In den WarenkorbWith a copper engraving as a frontispiece by John Buckland Wright, loose as issued and, unusually, signed by the artist. With an additional copy of the engraving on different paper, signed by the artist. An extra hors commerce copy marked H.C. for the artist printed on Holland paper (there were 6 normal hors commerce copies but these did not have the additional print). 8vo., original wrappers. A little spotting to the edges, otherwise a very good copy. The eighth book in the Stols series 'Les Belles Heures'. The copper engraving is rather in the style of Laboureur showing a semi-nude in her bedroom. This copy belonged to John Buckland Wright and has been in the family since it was printed and comes with an additional engraving on different paper.

In den WarenkorbTranslation by F.L. Lucas. One of only 100 numbered copies, printed for subscribers, this no. 60. 18 original copper engravings by John Buckland Wright being a combination of pure line-engraving and tints etched using the sugar-aquatine method. Large 4to., original full citron morocco Sangorski & Sutcliffe binding with a frieze of cockerels tooled in blind around the top and bottom of the whole binding, spine lettered in blind, in the original brown buckram slipcase. The usual offset from the turn-ins on the free endpapers, some spotting throughout. A beautiful and very limited edition. The process used gives an intensity to Buckland Wright's gently erotic engravings. The text with its superbly balanced refrain "Cras amet qui numquam amavit, quique amavit cras amet" (Loveless hearts shall love tomorrow, hearts that have loved shall love once more) is printed in both English and Latin on opposite pages. The smallest total limitation of any Golden Cockerel Press title.
