Pardo, Patrick and Robert Dean (eds). JOHN BALDESSARI Catalogue Raisonné. Volume Three: 1987-1993. 528 pages, including 450 color and 20 b&w plates. 4to, boards. New Haven, Yale University Press, 2015. This handsome volume, the third of the John Baldessari (b. 1931) catalogue raisonné project, compiles 400-plus unique works of art made by the influential conceptual artist from 1987 through 1993. In addition to a detailed chronology, complete exhibition history, and bibliography, this volume notably features a previously unpublished conversation between Baldessari and the artist Ed Ruscha, which was undertaken specifically for this publication.
Pardo, Patrick and Robert Dean (eds). JOHN BALDESSARI Catalogue Raisonné. Volume Two: 1975-1986. 496 pages, including 500 color and 20 b&w plates. 4to, boards in slipcase. New Haven, Yale University Press, 2013. This second volume focuses on an important period in Baldessari's career which sees him continuing his work in series and montages using photographs, film stills, and words. Hal Foster's introduction is heavy on the lit-speak, but at least there's not too much of it (7 pages). This is followed by a finely produced catalogue of full-page plates, chronology (1931 to 1986), Artist's Statements (very illuminating), exhibition history, and bibliography.
