Hand coloured lithograph heightened with gum arabic, 28.6 x 42.8cm (plate size), 32.6 x 43.3cm (with trimmed margins), toning at the plate mark and to the verso of the plate, paper repair affecting the upper left corner of the plate. A good example. Plate (no. 9) from the third volume of Gould's, "The mammals of Australia". Gould notes "The animal here represented was originally described by Mr Ogilby.from a drawing by Major Sir Thomas L. MItchell of a specimen obtained by him on the banks of the River Murray in South Australia. The accompanying Plate represents the animal in three positions and of the natural size." It is sobering to note that Gould records that the range of the species was extensive and hypothesized it probable that "the greater part of the interior would be inhabited by it". Over one hundred and fifty years after he wrote these words habitat destruction has decimated the population of this native creature.

Fine hand coloured lithograph heightened with gum arabic, 33.3 x 45.2cm (plate size), 38.3 x 55cm (sheet size), toning at the plate mark and to the margins, outer margins dusty with a single small sealed tear not affecting the plate small stitch holes to the inner margin. A very good example. A charming plate (no. 2) from the third volume of Gould's, "The mammals of Australia". Gould notes "This new species is about the size of and similar to H. albipes but it differs in having larger ears, much more delicately formed feet, the tail near destitute of the long brushy hairs towards the tip, and smaller eyes. Face and sides of the neck blue-grey; upper part of the head, space between the ears, the ears and upper parts of the body pale brown, interpersed with numerous fine black hairs; under surface white; flanks mingled grey and buffy white; fore feet white, with an oblique mark of dark brown separating the white from the greyish brown of the upper surface. The figures are the size of life." Delicate notes for a now extinct Australian species.

Fine hand coloured lithograph heightened with gum arabic, 38.6 x 55.8cm discolouration to the top edge, the face of the plate clean and unmarked, small stitch holes to the lower margin. A very good example. Fine plate (no. 51) from the fourth volume of John Gould's "The Birds of Great Britain". In the accompanying text to the plate Gould notes ".how widely does this bird range! and how distant does it wander from its breeding-place! Young birds generally wander further from their birth-place than adults; and hence it probably is that we never see an Australian example in the red dress, which may not be acquired until the bird is on its return to the place in which it was bred.[it] has two distinct lines of migration ? a western one through Europe to Africa, and an eastern from China, through the Philippines, and across the line to Australia, ? the great peninsula of India, and probably Burmah, forming a kind of neutral ground wherein it is seldom seen ? so rarely, indeed, that Mr. Jerdon does not include it in his ?Birds of India'. The Plate represents the male in his spring dress, and the female in winter, of the size of life.".
