Third edition, revised. 8vo. xxxix, 149, [1], [4], 92 pp. Original maroon blind- and gilt-stamped cloth; a bit rubbed at extremities. Very good. Conington's edition of Persius, with commentary and a prose translation was published posthumously in 1872. / Nettleship was an English classical scholar. "Nettleship had always been interested in Virgil, and a good deal of his time was devoted to his favourite poet. After John Conington's death in 1869, he saw his edition of Virgil through the press, and revised and corrected subsequent editions of the work. In 1875, he had undertaken to compile a new Latin lexicon for the Clarendon Press, but the work proved more than he could accomplish, and in 1887 he published some of the results of twelve years' labour in a volume entitled Contributions to Latin Lexicography, a genuine piece of original work." Cadell, 1825. Four volumes. Engraved copperplate portrait frontispiece in Vol. I, folding tables of consanguinity and descents in Vol. II. Publisher's catalogue and advertisement leaf in Vol. I. Light toning to interior, occasional light foxing and soiling. $500. * Sixteenth edition. Sir John Taylor Coleridge was an English judge (and the nephew of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge). He would go on to a distinguished judicial career on the Court of King's Bench, serving from 1835 to 1858. In addition to his judicial career, he wrote articles, edited the Quarterly Review and received a civil law doctorate from Oxford. His edition of the Commentaries was well-regarded. According to Eller, the present edition "is the first edition printed for T. Cadell after Cadell's publication of the fifteenth London edition, 1809. The numbering of English editions after that 1809 edition is irregular, some editors numbering from Archbold's 1811 edition as the sixteenth, and others numbering from this Coleridge 'sixteenth' edition." The former owner of our copy was likely Lewis Mathias [c.1813-1882], a graduate of Brasenose College who held a number of local offices, including a stint as High Sheriff of Pembrokeshire.
