Juni 1724 in Wolfenbuttel, sollte Anfangs das Bierbrauergewerbe seines Vaters betreiben und konnte daher erst sehr spät zum Studium gelangen, das er 1745 unter Heister und Grell in Helmstädt begann, wo er auch 1748 promovirte, und 1747 in Göttingen unter Haller und Brendel fortgesetzt batte. Nachdem er dann kurze Zeit in seiner Vaterstadt prakticirt hatte, liess er sich in Lübeck nieder, und war daselbst mit grossem Erfolge bis zu seinem Tode, 21. Aug. 1799, thätig. Wahlbaum war ein sehr tüchtiger Arzt und bedeutender Naturforscher, ausserdem ein fruchtbarer Schriftsteller, der zahlreiche naturwissenschaftliche Aufsätze und Abhandlungen in verschiedenen periodischen Zeitschriften und akademsichen Gelegenheitsreden lieferte, namentlich auf dem Gebiete der Ichthyologie. Von seinen eigentlich med. Schriften neunen wir u. A.: "Diss. de venaesectione veterum ac recentiorum" (Göttingen 1750) "Kurzgefasste Gedanken von dem verderbten Zustande der Hebammen und dessen Verbesserung" (Lübeck 1752)- "Verzeichniss einer vollständigen Apotheke mit einem Apothekerkalender" (Leipzig 1767-69, I-II) - "Die Beschwerlichkeit der Geburtshilfe aus Beyspielen erwiesen" (Bützow 1769) u.
