As part of two major exhibitions in South Africa he has made a limited original print of an etching entitled 'Oak mantra'. Among the media in which he works he is acknowledged to be one of the foremost printmakers in England, and to mark the exhibitions and the publishing of Oak Mantra it was decided to document the different stages in the making of the print. The project was conceived and executed within the space of ten weeks. The catalogue has been broken into three sections interspersed with an interview Joe Tilson gave to Dan Cornwall-Jones in November 1981.'.

Von 1971 bis 1972 war er Gastdozent an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Hamburg. Joe Tilson schafft typografisch komponierte Bilder und kombiniert dabei visuelles Zeichen und Begriffe: Combination Pictures.
