His work as a morphologist and evolutionist brought him international fame, and his contributions to scientific education and to the organisation of British science were immense. He made many enemies in the course of his only too active pursuit of his goals, but was respected and admired by scientists and by those of a liberal disposition. He knew numerous eminent figures of the time, including many outside the realms of science - Karl Marx, H. G. Wells and Anna Pavlova, to name only three. His work has now been largely forgotten, having fallen into that blind spot of the history of biology, the era between the original Darwinian debate and the emergence of the modern synthesis of genetics and Darwinism. Nevertheless, a cursory glance at the nature of his achievements makes it obvious that he is worthy of a serious study." (from the Editors' Preface) Previous owner's name and address to the half title page. The book is otherwise in excellent condition. There are no other inscriptions and all contents are tight and clean.
