I would lie in my hospital bed and notice something that needed to be done, but because I was a 'turtle on my back', I could not even water my flowers. Like Timothy, I eventually recovered, but not completely. Timothy, with the help of his friend, Tobias, learned that he could still do some things, like swimming in the lake, but he could not do everything. Timothy had to find joy by doing what he could and by being with his friends. The book also includes a kind deed by a child, who gets Timothy off his back and on the road to recovery. The young boy in the wheelchair also learns that he can enjoy the races even if he can't run.…

The first lesson is: there will always be people who will make us feel inferior or 'less than', such as the kids (animals) in school who would not let the turtles play. but we can still find our 'happy place.' The other lessons are from the Bible: 'Love your neighbor' and 'Do unto others as you would want them to do unto you.' The animals who had once rejected Tabitha, helped her because they realized how they would feel if they were in trouble and no one helped them. Lastly: Do not be s snob and brag on yourself. Tabitha turtle fell in a deep hole because she had her nose in the air. Lastly, Timothy and Tobias realize that there are many interesting activities they can do even if they are not good at physical sports, such as chess club, band, etc.…

I hope to explore changes in attitudes over my life span. This is not a research paper. I taught freshman English in two universities, where the students were required to document carefully. I don't want to do that anymore. I may get a date or a name wrong. Some names I changed on purpose, to avoid embarrassing the children or grandchildren of people who behaved badly. Instead of factual research, I want to explore emotions and attitudes as they changed over the years. Why are emotions so important We have just held a very divisive election. We are divided by politics and social mores. Yes, it is better if our emotions are grounded in actual facts; our recent election proved how dangerous feelings are when fed by lies, so I have tried to be as factual as my memory allows, but in the end, our behavior is shaped by how we feel.…
