[Shanghai n.d. ca. 1920], Kai Wen. Silk color woven cloth image, 84 x 20 cm. overall, hand-color tinted sky and red highlights, was mounted on a board, strong image, good color colophons in Chinese at both ends. OBSCURE AND VERY R A R E Complete Panoramic scenery of Shanghai and the Yellow River. This work is lovely and a very unique and obscure Shanghai item. Likely done for the foreign tourist trade, the verso has "Made in China" stamped on the back. There is a very faint stain at the upper right edge, else no other defects worth mentioning. * The work came to us framed. We have removed the work from the frame to inspect the verso and the edges. The edges read in Chinese: 1. Left margin: "Shànghai wéi wo guó san dà shang yè zhi yi, Huáng pu jiang bian wèi quán guó jing róng qu yào suo zài." Translates as: "Shanghai is one of China's three major commercial ports on Huang-pu River which is the country where the financial district is." ** 2. Right margin: Háng-zhou, Shànghai, qi wén mei shù si xiàn chang zhì zào. Translates as: Hang-zhou, Shanghai, Kai Wen Art Silk Factory manufacturing. What this means is that Kai Wen Art Silk Factory was the maker of this item. They had two locations: one in Hang-zhou the other in Shanghai. We assume that this item was made in Shanghai for the Shanghai tourist trade. * OBSCURE AND RARE ! This is surely a rare rendering of Shanghai and the busy Yellow River during the heyday of Shanghai as a busy and active port city. The stamp on the verso "Made in China" indicates that it was for export and attractive as a souvenir to foreign visitors. * The work is nicely hand colored at the top where the sky is along with some red as a highlight on the dock at the lower left as is a red stripe on the building in the foreground again on the left. The Harbor has a good number of ships underway as well as many moored. A lovely and stunning view of the sky-line, with the title written in Chinese characters at the top central location. The work was nicely woven in color. The only defects seem to be where the item was mounted on a board and framed. There are some small holes in the margin where it was pinned down. Else a lovely example of a very R A R E item ! *.
