Here is another large book, this time a soft cover trade paperback, of more recent vintage, about railroads. It is titled: Delaware & Hudson the History of an Important Railroad Whose Antecedent Was a Canal Network to Transport Coal, by Jim Shaughnessy. This very large soft cover book (8 ¼ x 11 inches, 476 pages) was published by Syracuse University Press of Syracuse, New York, dated 1997 and if I am reading the coding right, this is the First Edition/First Printing. It is bound in glossy, pictorial soft covers with an image of the Laurentian speeding through a wintry scene in Upstate New York. As usual, this book is well illustrated with lots of reproductions of vintage b&w photos of locomotives and other railroad scenes from this line. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The soft covers are clean and glossy and unscuffed; there is some very slight edge wear. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages and photos are clean and bright, from cover to cover. The binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…

Staying with my current group of books about railroads, I am pleased to offer another volume, this one in good condition but with a dust jacket that has clearly taken the brunt of the wear, titled, simply: The Rutland Road, by Jim Shaughnessy. This large hard cover (8 ¾ x 11 ¼ inches, 368 pages) was published by Howell-North Books of Berkeley, California, dated 1964 and a First Edition with the same date on title & copyright pages. The book is bound in a light green cloth with black titles on cover and spine; it is protected by a battered pictorial dust jacket. This book, like many of this genre, is copiously illustrated with b&w photos within. Condition: This book is in very good condition although I cannot say the same for the dust jacket. The dust jacket shows lots of edge wear and is split in several places but still holding together. It is also darkened and shows what I imagine are tobacco smoke stains (but with no remnant smell, at least not to my nose) on the edges and spine. Things get better from there. The hard covers are clean and bright with some darkening just on a few spots, nothing too easy to see. Inside, a former owner has left his inked name and date on the first blank page but that is the only mark I found in the book. The interior pages seem a bit toned to me but perhaps that is just the type of paper. In any event, they are not really soiled. Both hinges are intact, and the binding is tight and sound although a bit canted to the right. This book is not ex-library or a remainder.…

Here, in a pictorial history, Jim Shaughnessy turns an eloquent photographer's eye to the Delaware & Hudson, the line that began in 1823 as a canal system to transport Pennsylvania coal to New York State. The D&H extended from Montreal to the coal fields of northeastern Pennsylvania. It was active for 170 years, when the route was sold in 1993 to the Canadian Pacific Railway Corporation. The line made early railroad fame by importing from England the famous Stourbridge Lion, the first steam locomotive in America. This occurred during a great expansion into gravity, an interesting phase which took advantage of the mountainous terrain. The nineteenth century saw a period of economic growth and amalgamation, which was shaped by extremely able and ambitiou company presidents. Eventually the D&H advertised itself as "the Bridge Line to New England and Canada." Mountainous terrain around the coal mines challenged the line with heavy grades, so it was natural for one of its presidents, L. F. Loree, to be fascinated with experimental traction power. The many Loree locomotives, leaders in progressive design, are pictured and described herein. Because a good railroad history is always an economic history of a region, this book will surely please historian, too. Delaware & Hudson is a definitive work, encompassing the mining of the region and detailing the steamboat operations on Lakes George and Champlain. Syracuse University Press is pleased to reissue this exemplary study of a railroad.
