Paperback.  The Red Light of Palm Beach is the second book of a lighthouse quartet written by Jervis Sparks, who with his wife Bridget, lived at Barranjoey Lighthouse, Palm Beach, Sydney for 31 years, from 1968 to 1999.Foreword by Tom Keneally. A young woman's scrapbook album that belonged to Annie Jervis, containing numerous mounted engravings (several of which are hand-colored), a few manuscripts of verse, and two photographic prints. The first is a previously unknown photogenic drawing made by her father Thomas Jervis, Fellow of the Royal Society of London, in May 1839. The second is a salted paper portrait photograph of Annie Jervis (circa 1854) made by Juan, Count of Montizón, a founding member of the Royal Photographic Society. Small quarto (6" x 7½"). Contemporary dark purple blind-stamped cloth over boards. Owner's name on front free endpaper: "Annie Eliza Scott Jervis / Naples, March 1 [67?]." The binding is worn, most gatherings and individual leaves are loose or detached with frayed edges, else very good overall, with a few scattered small color pencil marks made by a child. Housed in a handsome clamshell box in quarter black morocco, gilt spine, and interior chemise. 1. Photogenic drawing of two feathers (10 x 9½ cm). Captioned in ink by Thomas Jervis along the bottom edge of the image. 2. Salted paper print (11½ x 15½ cm). Portrait of Annie Jervis, likely taken in 1854 when she was about twenty years old. Captioned in ink underneath the print. Lieut.-Colonel Thomas Best Jervis, born in British Ceylon in 1796, was a prominent engineer and surveyor based in India for much of his career. A member of the Bombay branch of the Royal Asiatic Society (BBRAS), Thomas Best and his brother George Risto won fame for "their pioneering contributions to the cause of rational education and to the dissemination of scientific knowledge which marked the beginning of the process of Modernization in the post 1818 Western India." While on furlough in 1838-39, then Captain Thomas Best was resident in London when William Henry Fox Talbot presented his paper about the photogenic process to the Royal Society in February of 1839. Also at this time (April, 1839), Jervis was corresponding with Sir John F.W. Herschel, Britain's most preeminent scientist, who in 1839 was conducting experiments in photochemistry and proved that his sodium thiosulfate was the most powerful fixer for silver-based photographic images. Thomas Best's known correspondence with Herschel (in April and September, 1839) suggests that he may have made use of Herschel's sodium thiosulfate or "hypo," the substance which soon came into use as a fixing agent, in his experimental photogenic drawing. A rare and remarkable print made in the spring of 1839 before Talbot's public lectures in the summer of that year on the emerging art of photography, and which certainly could be considered as the first "amateur" photograph ever made. Presentation copy of this wall-map --- Impressive wall-map of Crimea, with a wealth of information: a presentation copy of the first edition of this detailed document of military topographical intelligence produced at the outbreak of the war in the region. Based upon an 1816 survey by Major General Semyon Mukhin, it was published with significant amendments and updates by Thomas Best Jervis (1796-1857), a major of the Corps of Engineers and member of the Geological and Geographical Societies, who presented this copy to Her Majesty's 30th Regiment. A contemporary manuscript note, next to one of the presentation inscriptions, gives the publisher as being Williams & Norgate and Petheram (which could be confirmed by a Williams & Norgate label which we found on another example). The map was subsequently re-issued in various formats, with editions published in Turin, Paris and Brussels. Making maps was Jervis's passion and from 1846 he began to pitch his proposals for military cartography to Lord Aberdeen, insisting that the War Office needed someone to improve the geographical information available to expeditionary forces. The start of the Crimean war and lack of information about the territory that the British forces were to encroach proved Jervis's point. Thus, with the permission from the War Office Jervis went to work with alacrity and created a map of the Crimea. Subsequently, on 2 February 1855, Lord Panmure finally made the foundation of an intelligence department official, which was to be called the Topographical and Statistical Department and of which Jervis was to take command. This example of Jervis' map later belonged to Major Gerald Wilson Reside (1906-99), whose name and address appears on the accompanying letter. The addresser, Pauline from 24 Sussex Street in London SW1V, writes that she "tried several publishing houses on the subject of your [Major Reside's] maps [.]. The last one I spoke to has suggested [.] that you write to the director of the Maps Dept, The National Army Museum, Royal Hospital Road, London SW3 to see if they are interested in your maps". Gerald Reside served with the Royal Artillery in France and Belgium during the Second World War, achieving the rank of Major. He settled in the Newry area and dedicated his life to collecting rare and important documents on local history. His collection of 10,000 documents is now kept at the Newry & Mourne Museum. This copy also shows a discrete blind-stamped moto, not always present on other copies: "Geography While it explores the darkest recesses of nature should light up the darkest retreats of Humanity". Provenance: T.B. Jervis and Her Majesty's 30th Regiment, contemporary presentation inscription "Presented to Her Majesty's 30th Regiment by T.B. Jervis" (presentation inscription in two places); Major Gerald Wilson Reside, N. Ireland (addressee of the accompanying letter). Physical description:Large engraved wall-map (ca. 135 × 220 cm) dissected into panels and mounted on three sheets of linen, with hand-coloured inset 'Geological map of the Krima or Crimea Originally drawn up by Mr. Hout for the Russian Govt.', five sheets of letter-press laid on outer panels providing geographical and military information on the Russian Empire: "A General Account of the Extent of the Russian Empire "; "Organization of the Military and Naval Forces of Russia "; "Miscellaneous useful Information connected with present Seat of War, and the Powers and States engaged therein"; and "Remarks on the proper Pronunciation of Foreign, and Asiatic Words in particular"; as well as "Index to the Map of the Krima Peninsula" cut in two parts, pull-tabs. Accompanied by a letter addressed to Major Gerald Reside dated 31/08/[19]90.
