In den WarenkorbFine tranche of captivating and apparently unpublished images of Miles in the early 60s, the work of the highly acclaimed Jerry Stoll, "house photographer" to the Monterey Jazz Festival during its inaugural years (1958-66). Two show a pensive Miles onstage at Monterey in '63, these images clearly taken at the same time as that used for the cover of the album Miles Davis Quintet: Live at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival. There is an excellent profile shot of the trumpeter in performance and two others taken from behind and at a low angle, catching something of the inward nature of Miles's ballad playing. Another shows him looking quizzically beyond the cameraman. Two terrific, closely-framed shots, apparently taken at rehearsals, show Davis with the brilliant Tony Williams, whom Davis would refer to as "the fire, the creative spark" - the trumpeter looking relaxed and clearly beguiled by his new young drummer. In Miles: The Autobiography, Davis mentions Williams's appearance at Monterey in '63, initially sitting in with the veterans Elmer Snowden and Pops Foster, whose drummer had failed to show up. "So he played with them two guys he had never heard of, had never heard their music, and was a motherfucker; just turned Pops and Elmer and the whole entire festival out. That's how bad that young little motherfucker was. Then a little later after he got through playing with them, he went on with us and really kicked ass. All this from a seventeen-year-old who nobody had hardly heard of before the beginning of the year". Another image shows Miles in performance with Coltrane, possibly dating to early 1960, the year the tenorist left the quintet, this a fine study, Davis's head in deep shadow, Coltrane standing in the background, head bowed. Finally, there are two candid shots, one a delightful off guard image of Davis in conversation while seated on a wash hand basin, his trumpet case to hand, and a full-length portrait that captures the classic Davis profile, pictured practicing in a backstage bathroom and using the harmon mute that he employed to such memorable effect. Miles Davis and Quincy Troupe, Miles: The Autobiography, 1990. Eleven "7 x 5" inch photograph proofs (178 x 127 mm). Studio wet stamp to versos and each marked as "Proof". All in excellent condition.
