Trade paperback. Zustand: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. 128 pages. Illustrations. Maps. Inscribed on half title by the author. Small scratch near bottom of back cover. This is one of the Images of America series. Jerry A. McCoy has loved American history since his father introduced him to stamp collecting Determined to live in Washington, DC, he moved there in 1978, earning a M.S. in Library Science from The Catholic University of America. McCoy became fascinated with the history of "hometown" Washington. Since 2000 he has been a librarian and archivist there. In 1992 McCoy moved to downtown Silver Spring, MD and immediately delved into researching his new community's history. In 1993 he located Silver Spring's 1937 post office mural, long placed in storage, and with the Friends of the Silver Spring Library raised $25,000 for its restoration. McCoy founded the Silver Spring Historical Society, whose mission is to preserve the community's local history. This was followed with the publication of two local history books, Historic Silver Spring in 2005 and Downtown Silver Spring in 2010. Historic Silver Spring celebrates the community's past, beginning with founder Francis Preston Blair's 1840 discovery of the mica-flecked spring and the 1873 arrival of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. Vintage photographs document the progressive growth of the "Main Streets," Georgia Avenue and Colesville Road, and the construction of the Silver Spring Armory and National Dry Cleaning Institute in 1927 and the Silver Theatre and Silver Spring Shopping Center in 1938. The volume culminates with modern pictures of downtown Silver Spring's 21st-century revitalization, which continues to preserve the past and secure the future of the area. In a pictorial journey through the community's Central Business District and bordering residential neighborhood, East Silver Spring, Historic Silver Spring honors the people and places that have come before.

Silver Spring Historical Society single page membership application laid in. This is one of the Images of America series. The author received the Historic Preservation Medal in Recognition of Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation Historic Preservation Medal in Recognition of Outstanding Achievement in Historic Preservation Issued by National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution April 2014. He is a professional librarian and archivist. Photographer Willard R. Ross (1860-1948) moved to the district around 1910, where he became a postcard photographer specializing in "hometown" views. The collection in the possession of the District of Columbia Library consists largely of building and street views - churches, cemeteries, schools, businesses, and other public buildings are well represented - but also contains some images of Washingtonians, including many images of the adventures of the Wanderlusters, a co-ed hiking club. Ross assigned captions and non-unique numbers to most of his postcard images which are used as the item titles. Many of his images grace the pages of this work on Silver Spring, Maryland.
